It’s the end of an era for one of West Lakes’ most iconic homes.

Having stood the test of time for 46 years, 14 Cooba Way – known for its “old-Hollywood-glam” – is set to face the wrecking ball after selling at auction for $1.825m to a foreign developer.

Selling agent Heyley Turner of Harris Real Estate said the home attracted plenty of interest from family buyers looking to renovate but, in the end, proved too good of a deal for developers to pass up on.

“We had 13 registered bidders and it was a really fast, scary auction. I couldn’t even keep up writing down the bids,” Ms Turner said.

“Most of the interest came from developers but there were also a few families looking to buy it to renovate.

“It’s a deceased estate and the family would have liked for it to go to another family … but they decided to take it to auction, even though we warned them it could sell to a developer.

“And that’s what happened. The property sold to an Indian developer as it has the potential for three new properties to be built on.”

Built in 1976, the one-owner solid brick home sits on a valuable 990sqm corner allotment that fronts the fairways of the West Lakes Golf Club.

It’s been described as a Hollywood-esque time warp with features seventies-style arches, busy carpets and wallpaper, timber-clad ceilings and grand spaces.

The original kitchen with timber cabinetry, square-tiled mosaic benchtops and arched stove alcove is a stand out, as is the master bedroom, which finds refuge in its own wing and includes an ensuite, external access and a dressing room that wouldn’t look out of place in an original Bond movie.

There’s also a teen-pleasing rumpus with room for a snooker table and its very own bar.

Ms Taylor said losing the home to developers would no doubt be felt by the community.

“We had a lot of people come through the home, people who always wanted to know what it looked like inside … and they weren’t disappointed as the home feels like old Hollywood glam,” she said.

“The ceilings had sparkles in the main living areas and the home also came with two bars.

“Back in the day, it would have been a really great entertainer … the best and biggest house in the street.”
