No auction joy for Neighbours star Peter O’Brien, but sale announcement imminent

While Neighbours star Peter O’Brien’s Glenelg home might not have sold under the hammer today, its selling agent says he is confident the sale will be done and dusted within the coming days.

Century 21 The Bay’s Paul Dale, who is selling the home for the much-loved actor, said the property attracted about 40 onlookers, four registered bidders, with two bidding on the day, but fell short of what O’Brien was chasing.

He said he was close to close to securing a sale, and he expected a sold sticker to go up in the coming days.

“The auction was well attended with strong bidding and we’re now negotiating with the highest bidder and other bidders, as well as some other very interested parties, some of whom are flying in the coming days as they couldn’t physically make it to the auction,” he said.

“We’re going to get there, but it’s just going to take a couple of days.”

Presented in largely original condition, the four-bedroom, two-bathroom home sits on a 418sqm allotment just moments from the beach and Glenelg’s prized amenities.

Mr Dale said the interest in the property was split between those wanting to retain the existing home and renovate it and those looking to develop the site.

“Everyone has been blown away by its location, and its proximity to the beach, particularly those from interstate who can’t believe the value for money on offer here.”

O’Brien’s late parents Betty and Jack bought the 5 Percival St home as a holiday house in the mid-’60s while the family were living on a farm in Tailem Bend, eventually moving into the property while Peter was at school and university.

The Sacred Heart College, and Adelaide and Flinders University alumni – who would later go on to play memorable roles in Neighbours, The Flying Doctors, Cardiac Arrest, Water Rats, White Collar Blue, Casualty, Queer As Folk and X-Men Origins: Wolverine – took ownership of the home when the last of his parents passed away a decade ago.

Based in Sydney with wife, fellow actor and Lord of The Rings star Miranda Otto, and their daughter, after having previously lived in the States and the UK, O’Brien told The Advertiser at the time of listing the home had also been a fantastic base during his SA work stints or family visits.

“It’s a great old house and you don’t realise its proximity to everything until you actually live there,” he said.

With his life based interstate and overseas, save for the dozen or more visits he makes back to SA each year for work – he’s currently deferred an honours degree and PhD in motion capture and AI through Flinders due to filming commitments – O’Brien said the time had come to sell.
