A copygate row has erupted on My Reno Rules, with claims of idea-pinching in House 1 after a paint store showdown revealed near-identical pink palettes in the race for Adrian Portelli’s $250,000 prize.

The clash centred on Nathan and Julia and mother-daughter duo Emma and Michelle, with tensions escalating after matching wallpaper tones, a scrapped bedroom bar and almost identical paint choices.

“There’s a fine line between cohesion and copying,” Julia said, confronting the pair over what she believed were overlapping designs.

The pressure had been building from the start.

Emma and Michelle entered the week still rattled by last round’s judging, where their living room was branded “hideous” by judges, and were determined to reset with a bold en suite and parents’ lounge.

Securing those rooms came at a strategic cost, with Nathan and Julia negotiating hard to lock in first pick of next week’s kitchen in exchange.

“She’s a bloody good negotiator,” Emma said.

But the room battle quickly turned into a design war.

Emma and Michelle’s plan to move the en suite doorway for symmetry cut into the wall space Julia needed for her master bedroom bar, forcing her into a compromised layout before the build had properly begun.

When Adrian Portelli arrived with judge Neale Whitaker for a surprise walk-through, the pressure intensified.

Neale warned Emma and Michelle their dark en suite risked feeling like a “tomb”, triggering a last-minute rethink as they scrambled to lighten the design without the budget to start again.

At the same time, his feedback forced Nathan and Julia into their own pivot, with the proximity of Emma and Michelle’s breakfast bar making their bedroom bar feel too similar to proceed.

That left Julia stuck with cabinetry already paid for and no clear way to use it.

Then came the paint store showdown.

Julia arrived to collect paint for her colour-drenched master bedroom, only to find Emma and Michelle selecting what she believed was the same shade of pink.

“To me, those paints look exactly the same,” she said.

Emma pushed back, insisting the colours were different and that they had made their own choices, but the confrontation exposed how closely the two designs were tracking.

“I feel like now there’s not any originality in anything we’re doing,” Julia said.

The dispute followed earlier tension over wallpaper selections, with both teams landing on similar blush tones, further fuelling claims of idea overlap.

Emma and Michelle rejected any suggestion they were copying, saying they had simply followed their own instincts under pressure.

As House 1 unravelled, House 2 faced a different kind of problem.

Front-runners Mitch and Shaz pushed ambitious designs as they tried to extend their winning streak on My Reno Rules. Picture: Seven/7Plus

Mitch and Shaz, coming off a double win and a $10,000 bonus, pushed ahead with an ambitious parents’ lounge featuring a timber ceiling, curved wall and marble finishes, a plan that quickly absorbed the majority of available trades.

Neale praised their vision but warned them to know when to pare back, as the scale of their build began to stretch resources across the site.

That left Franky and Isaac, who were trying to move off the bottom of the leaderboard, waiting for trades as their own rooms stalled.

Neale Whitaker and Adrian Portelli challenged Isaac and Franky to go big as they fought to escape the bottom of the leaderboard.

The pair had planned a hidden en suite concealed behind walk-in robe joinery, a high-impact idea that relied heavily on labour they suddenly did not have.

“Mitch and Shaz have had to build their roof, so they’ve used all the labour,” Franky said.

Despite the setbacks, Neale’s advice to think bigger gave the boys confidence to push ahead with bold design choices as they tried to claw their way back into contention.

Meanwhile, Mitch and Shaz made a late pivot on their neglected study, converting it into a fourth bedroom inspired by their son Lenny, a move they hoped would boost value, but one that carried clear judging risk.

By the final stretch, every team was under pressure.

Emma and Michelle were scrambling to fix their ensuite after running short on tiles and reworking their design.

Nathan and Julia were trying to recover from a compromised layout and growing copycat claims.

Franky and Isaac were racing to make up lost time.

And Mitch and Shaz were attempting to prove their early dominance was no fluke.
