Former Geelong mayor and paparazzo Darryn Lyons is offloading $6m in property, including a Far North Queensland haven featuring gorilla statues and a distinctive pink Sydney apartment.

The media personality, once known for his distinctive pink Mohawk and his paparazzo days in the 1990s, is selling up after moving abroad for work and travel opportunities.

As part of the portfolio reshuffle Mr Lyons, aka Mr Paparazzi, has listed a four-bedroom property at 16 Rankin St, Newell, in Far North Queensland for sale for offers over $2.5m.

On the market through Mark Flinn, of Ray White Port Douglas, the home features bold architectural design enhanced by striking gorilla sculptures – a nod to Mr Lyons’ former art business ownership.

Darryn Lyons, known as Mr Paparazzi, was once the mayor of Geelong and worked as a paparazzo.

“The gorillas are powerful, grounded, and protective, much like the home itself,” Mr Lyons said.

“The world simply falls away when you arrive here.

“Any stress disappears the second you enter.

“I do sometimes wonder why I’m selling – but this home deserves someone who can truly inhabit it.”

Mr Lyons said the property had been his escape from the world.

“You don’t hold a property like this unless it continually gives something back to you,” he said.

“This hasn’t just been ownership; it’s been a long-term love affair.”

Mr Lyons said his first encounter with the property was “spiritual, instant and undeniable”.

“It’s a luxurious observation home for the natural world,” he said.

“Every space is designed to frame what’s outside – the ocean, the rainforest, the sky, the light.

“You don’t live beside nature here, you live inside it.

“It’s not just a home, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime way of living, and I’ve lived the dream with this home.

“How many properties can you walk down your back garden and step onto a private seven-mile beach?

“You have the ocean as your backyard and rainforest as your front yard.”

Set on a 1012 sqm block, the absolute beachfront property with wet-edge pool, lush landscaping and ocean views.

Set across two levels, the home has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, easy indoor-outdoor flow, open living spaces and walls of glass to take in the tropical outlook.

The property is less than 15 minutes to Port Douglas.

Also on the market, is Mr Lyons’ two-bedroom pink apartment in Sydney’s Harry Seidler-designed Horizon Building.

Mr Lyons bought the 15th floor apartment at 1502/184 Forbes St, Darlinghurst off the plan in 1998.

He transformed the property into a luxurious pink haven with views of the Sydney CBD, Woolloomooloo Bay, the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.

The property is going to auction on Saturday, February 21 and has an auction guide of $3.8m.
