A Great Gatsby-style Moonee Ponds house featuring a panic room has sold for more than $8m.

The Art Deco-esque home at 106 Eglinton St showcases several other high-end inclusions such as a cigar and whiskey room, lift, marble staircase, half-basketball court and soccer pitch, pool and 15-person spa.

An impressive basement level boasts a seven-car garage including a vehicle turntable, 2000-bottle wine cellar, theatre room, boxing gym space, weights gym and bathroom.

The five-bedroom abode was initially listed with a $10.5m-$11.5m asking range, later lowered to $9.5m-$10.5m, in 2024.

Jellis Craig Moonee Valley and Kensington director John Morello said the 1240sq m property was taken off the market last year when it didn’t sell and relisted in spring 2025.

The house’s last advertised range was $7.85m-$8.6m with an expressions of interest process set to close on November 25.

However, the home sold three weeks into the campaign after multiple offers came in from buyers.

Mr Morello declined to comment on the sold figure but an agency social media post stated the residence fetched in excess of $8m.

The whiskey and cigar room was popular with buyers.

A bookcase slides backwards to reveal the concealed panic room.

However, he said the panic room, concealed behind sliding bookshelves in the library room, did not particularly appeal to the new owners, a local family.

“I think the main thing was the whole idea of buying something that was done and ready to move into, it’s turnkey,” Mr Morello said.

“They wanted something that was unique to the area, the size was important to them, the opulence and the multi-generational living set-up appealed too, the fact they could have family live with them.”

There’s room for six cars in the basement garage.

The father loved the cigar and whiskey room, the mother was a fan of the wellness set-up downstairs and the kids couldn’t wait to give the basketball court and pool a try, he added.

Mr Morello said about a dozen groups inspected the house this year, before it sold.

“To recreate that today you would need $10m to $12m in today’s dollars including for the land and you still wouldn’t have change,” he said.

The 2017-built abode’s outdoor undercover entertainment area contains a wood-fired oven, barbecue, fridge, television and electric pizza oven.

A fire pit with seating and pavilion with a retractable awning also features in the backyard.

Records show Moonee Ponds’ $12.75m house price record was set by 54 Park St in May, 2025.
