236 Hedges Ave, Mermaid Beach

A 1960s cottage described as one of the last remaining original “love shacks” along the Gold Coast’s most coveted stretch has sold for $4.55m.

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom home at 236 Hedges Ave, Mermaid Beach was last transferred for $220,000 in 1995 and had been rented in 2015 at $800 a week.

It was sold at auction by McGrath agent Richard Snowden.

Mr Snowden said the property was a deceased estate and had been held by the same family for more than 30 years.

Its prestigious location – albeit across the road from the sand – had drawn strong interest from local and interstate buyers.

Three offers were received prior to auction day, with seven bidders registered as it went under the hammer. A local buyer won the keys and had not yet indicated his plans for the site.

“When you think of Mermaid Beach, you think of golden sands, world-class surf and some of Gold Coast’s most popular restaurants but there is one address that stands out above the rest and that is Hedges Ave,” Mr Snowden said.

“236 Hedges Ave is one of the last remaining original 60s love shacks, sitting on a 405sqm medium block with impressive 19m frontage.”

He said the new owner could either, “keep the character build home, land bank for the future, or build the home of their dreams”.

The cottage presented with classic charm, walls painted dark grey with white breeze blocks, and picture windows framed by striped awnings.

It had a large lawn with retro wrought iron garden furniture, while gleaming timber floors extended through interiors, including a spacious open-plan kitchen, living and dining area and second living space beside the master bedroom, which faced a front porch.

PropTrack data shows the median house price in Mermaid Beach is $3,321,250 – up 18.6 per cent since last year.

And best of all, the beach across the road

Originally dubbed ‘millionaires’ row’, Hedges Ave is now known as ‘billionaires’ row’ in recognition of the huge rise in prices which continues despite cooling growth in other regions.

Since February 2024, less than 40 properties have transacted in the area, including seven priced at $10m and above.
