A Kensington house has made its lucky owners unexpected millionaires after a Saturday auction.

The two-bedroom home at 1 Robertson St was listed with a $900,000-$990,000 range but soared to seven-figures under the hammer.

Rendina Real Estate director Lou Rendina said the residence sold for $1.221m after four bidders competed for the keys.

The result was an impressive $231,000 above the $990,000 reserve, the figure at which the abode was placed on the market.

Mr Rendina said one of the owners, who was in Bali at the time of the auction, had joked over the phone that she would be celebrating with a cocktail.

“They’ve over the moon and it was way above their expectations,” Mr Rendina added.

The home’s new owners, a young couple, said they were excited to have secured their first property after three months of searching.

“We wanted to live in Kensington and the inner city, and it’s a great little house,” one of the buyers said.

The kitchen’s stainless-steel appliances include a dishwasher and gas cooktop.

The house features an updated kitchen with stainless-steel appliances, dedicated study area with a built-in desk and polished hardwood floors.

Mr Rendina said the Kensington area’s prices could potentially surge in 2026’s first half, as there was not a lot of listings coming onto the market at the moment.

“But if more landlords start selling, you might find that it will level the playing field a bit,” he said.

The Kensington house’s owners were investors who had formerly rented it out.

Buyers could see the potential for renovation in the home.

A Victorian-era Northcote house also exceeded its owners’ hopes on the weekend, after fetching $1.715m under the hammer.

The property’s online listing described the three-bedroom home at 65 Bridge St as “having seen better days” with “plenty of scope for renovation and extension”.

Nelson Alexander principal Luke Sacco said the opening $1.6m bid was already above the $1.45-$1.58m advertised range.

Four bidders attempted to make the home theirs.

The home is close to Westgarth Village, shops, trams, Merri train station and walking trails. It is also zoned for Northcote High School and Merri Creek Primary School.

“A family who are planning on doing a renovation were the purchasers,” Mr Sacco said.

“They were won over by its character and the north-facing backyard.”

The location close to Westgarth Village, cafes, parks and public transport also appealed.

Mr Sacco said he had seen some house hunters “almost panic buying” in an attempt to secure a property before Christmas but it was not a widespread phenomenon.
