Retro Birkenhead home offering buyers a time capsule

Calling all those who enjoy a walk down memory lane – crossing beyond this retro home’s white picket fence is like taking a step back in time.

The original art deco house in Birkenhead, at 25 Levi St, is like a time capsule as it has barely changed since it was built in the early 1960s.

With the exception of a new roof and some painting inside, the home remains in its original condition.

That could be about to change though, as it is scheduled to be auctioned on Wednesday.

Selling agent Peter Kikianis, of Ray White Semaphore, said it was more than just a two-bedroom home – it was a family legacy in a sought-after location.

The Birkenhead property at 25 Levi St is a time capsule.

It has barely been changed since it was built in the early 1960s.

The home has two bedrooms and one bathroom.

“It’s a time capsule of Adelaide’s multicultural heritage and a family’s enduring legacy,” he said.

“The property is a blank canvas in a tightly-held location, and is in close proximity to the Osborne Shipyards, historic Port Adelaide and the beaches of Semaphore.”

Mr Kikianis said the new buyer had plenty of scope to move in, renovate, extend or completely redevelop the site, with council approval.

The quaint home was built by a Polish immigrant couple in the early 1960s and represented a new beginning for them in SA.

The couple’s daughter, Irene Lynch, had fond memories of growing up in the home with her sister Krystyna.

“The kitchen was very small but it was always where we gathered for meals,” she said.

“My mum cooked, my dad came home at 5pm, and the meal was set.

“Family, relatives – it was always around that table.”

Ms Lynch’s father arrived in Australia with his parents and was initially placed at the Hahndorf barracks.

Pink is a main feature of the bathroom.

It has served as a beloved family home since the 1960s.

The home will be auctioned on Wednesday.

He later built his family home using local materials.

While he passed away 20 years ago, Ms Lynch’s mother remained in the home until April last year when she moved into aged care.

Ms Lynch hoped another family would enjoy the house.

“I hope a loving family will be there for a long time creating as many happy family memories as we did,” she said.

“There’s lots of potential for someone to make it their own.”

The auction will be held at 5.30pm on Wednesday.

According to latest PropTrack data, the median house price in Birkenhead has climbed 9.2 per cent in the past year to $830,000.
