As a builder, John Moss did everything possible to transform a sprawling Eden Hills property into his forever home.
With a meticulous eye for detail, he extensively renovated the stone-fronted, five-bedroom home, incorporating a state-of-the-art marble kitchen and exquisite living spaces to suit both intimate gatherings and grand-scale entertaining.
He added a private gym and magnificently landscaped the 7698sqm property, creating a large outdoor kitchen and alfresco that overlooks a solar-heated infinity pool.
But there was one factor Mr Moss and wife Sandra didn’t count on that’s led to the surprise decision to list 1 Benara St for sale – their beloved grandchildren.
“It’s been a real hard decision and they (the grandchildren) are the only reason we are selling – it’s not a monetary thing or anything else,’’ Mr Moss said.
“They’re now at the age where they go to school and we want to be (close enough) to start picking them up and dropping them off and doing all the stuff that grandparents do.
“It’s definitely going to be hard to leave though. We’ve been here nearly 11 years – our two sons have lived here and then their girlfriends and now wives lived here as well for a little while.
“We’ve had the best time in this house and there’s plenty of memories.’’

The Eden Hills property was built with entertaining in mind.
The home includes a private gym and sauna.
The solar-heated pool comes with stunning views.
Mr Moss said it was the uninterrupted ocean views that initially attracted the family to the home, along with its backing onto a local reserve that ensured it would never be built out.
He said his work as a carpenter gave him a solid idea of how the renovation should proceed, ensuring the picturesque outlook was always maintained.
“From our loungeroom, the view is just unimaginable,’’ Mr Moss said.
“The sunsets are second-to-none – all the purples and reds. They’re really quite magical.
``I will miss those views but I will actually miss everything (about the house) – the pool, my bedroom, the sunsets.
“There’s not just one thing – I will miss everything.
“To find something (another home) with everything we want is going to be hard. We will probably find something that needs to be renovated.’’
A car enthusiast, Mr Moss said the home currently had garaging for five vehicles but, to meet the needs of potential buyers, he had recently had plans drawn up to reconfigure the gym to accommodate up to five more vehicles or become a two-bedroom retreat.

Too cold to entertain outside? Bring the party inside.
No home of this grandeur would be complete without a music room.
“Whoever comes here and looks at the house will want to buy it because it’s just amazing,’’
Mr Moss said.
“It looks a pretty flash home but it is a family home and that’s really what it’s always been.
“We always had lots of family and friends here and our sons would invite their friends for
pool parties.
“Another family with children would really love it. The amount of space for everyone is
fantastic.’’
The home is listed with Williams Real Estate without a price guide. Offers close Wednesday,
April 2.
