Inside the insane penthouse billion-dollar tech boss is now selling

Sports tech richlister Laurie Malone has put his Brisbane skyhome on the market, fresh from embarking on a $20m-plus property buying spree across the city.

Among his purchases, the CEO and co-founder of health technology company, Vald, splashed $10.35m on a heritage-listed home on the New Farm riverfront, which he plans to spend around $5m partially redeveloping into a four-level, four-bedroom trophy home.

But his biggest buy is that of the penthouse in Spyre Group’s ‘Moray House’ development, which is set to be completed in April — for an undisclosed price.

Mr Malone said his wife had just given birth to their second child, and they were planning to have more, so they needed somewhere larger.

“My wife and I have this great debate about where to live,” he said. “I love an apartment, she wants to move to Griffith Street and renovate that.

“For now, we’re going to try penthouse living. The (Moray House penthouse is) two floors, so it’s a lot bigger.”

Records show Mr Malone paid $8.2m in September 2024 for the penthouse he is now selling in the ‘Aquila’ building by local developer, Tom Dooley.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom residence at 10/81 Moray St occupies an entire floor and boasts uninterrupted Brisbane River, Story Bridge and city skyline views from every room.

“It is absolutely timeless,” Mr Malone said.

Despite all the success Vald has achieved, including recently becoming a $1 billion company, he said buying the ‘Aquila’ penthouse was one of his best decisions.

“Buying that penthouse has made me feel successful,” he said. “You walk in there and look at that view — it’s just breathtaking. Every time when I go to bed and walk past that view, I think; ‘I’m so lucky’.”

Along with a study, media lounge, and cellar room, the property has private lift access and is only 500m to Howard Smith Wharves.

Joel Imeson of Griffith & Co, who is handling the sale, said the building was tightly-held and apartments highly sought-after.

“Residents in ‘Aquila’ don’t sell…they’ll tell you they’re going out of there in a box,” Mr Imeson said.

“Stock’s tight at the high end and these are the people who aren’t affected by an ebbing and flowing market. The people who have enquired already are lots of AFR richlisters who have done something significant.”

Vald started as an idea in Mr Malone’s Brisbane garage 11 years ago and has since exploded to become a billion-dollar tech company with 95 per cent of America’s $70-plus billion sports market.

The Australian firm provides equipment and technological aids to help sport stars assess human movement and reduce the risk of injury.

Vald’s client base includes NRL, AFL, EPL, and more than 30 national Olympic teams, and it employs more than 200 staff globally — but Mr Malone has kept the company’s headquarters in Brisbane.

“I couldn’t think of anywhere better to raise my family,” he said. “I just love Brisbane. I love the climate, I love the people, and it’s just matured so much…it’s no longer a big, country town.”

Expressions of interest close February 20.
