One of the Gold Coast’s oldest surviving workers’ cottages has defied demolition, attracting extraordinary tenant demand after its owner relocated and lovingly restored the 117-year-old timber home.
The property at Gilston, in the Hinterland, was leased within seven days for $1,250 per week, $300 more than the median weekly rent in Gilston.
“The response from prospective tenants was incredible, and leasing the home within seven days for $1,250 per week shows that people are looking for homes with character, authenticity and a story to tell,” said Blanche Heperi, head of property management at Ray White TMG.

“The current owner hasn’t just restored a beautiful Queensland cottage, he’s preserved an important piece of Gilston’s story.”
The cottage was built by the pioneering Bowden family and originally stood 500m from its current location.
It is also the birthplace of John Bowden, whose journey from a Gilston dairy farm to becoming a respected Gold Coast businessman is documented in his biography, Never a Dull Moment.
