Fashion icon’s former home sells at ‘aggressive’ auction

A picture-perfect Paddington cottage once owned by fashion icon Collette Dinnigan sold for $12.1m at auction on Saturday.

The result is nearly double the $6.5m she sold it for more than nine years ago.

It was Dinnigan who masterminded the interiors of 75 Paddington St after buying the 379sqm property for $4.45m in 2009 and selling it for $6.5m in 2015.

This time round Maclay Longhurst of Sotheby’s and Cooley’s auctioneer Jake Moore had three registered, all who fought aggressively with $100k bids from $11m, which had been the price guide.

It’s understood the reserve was close to the guide.

The buyer of the four-bedroom, three-bathroom residence was a local family, and the underbidders were also a family and an eastern suburbs downsizer.

There’s a lot to love about it, with its 11.5m frontage and rare backyard pool.

Dinnigan had purchased it from jewellery heir, Peter Bracher of the Paspaley Pearl family, who had himself set a local price record when he’d snapped it up in 1989 for $1.075m.

The current vendor was Francis Kennedy from the prominent horse-racing family.

The revived 1880s sandstone residence is a perfectly preserved example of Sydney’s Victorian-era architecture with contemporary flair.

Dinnigan bought the property for $4.45m in 2009.


She sold for $6.5m in 2015.


Beyond its manicured front lawn and classic front veranda, the house had been reimagined for modern day entertaining.

The L-shaped ground floor layout features a combined formal living and dining room with traditional French doors to the pool courtyard, as well as a sleek open plan eat-in kitchen with big stacker doors also opening to the outdoor area.

In other east results, a two-bedroom terrace on a 139sqm block at 79 Kingsclear Rd, Alexandria sold for $2.05m against a reserve of $2m.

The Agency’s Brad Gillespie had six register with three active.
