Ex-NZ PM Jacinda Ardern’s home sale confirms Aussie move

This is a coming-of-age tale about a Kiwi traversing the well travelling immigrant road from New Zealand to Australia – the asterisk being she was Prime Minister of the Shaky Islands before making the trip.

Jacinda Ardern has confirmed her long-term commitment to settling down in Australia, after the Ex-NZ PM and her husband Clarke Gayford put their Auckland home up for sale on Tuesday.

The four bedroom, two bathroom bungalow in Sandringham – 7km southwest of the Auckland CBD – is expected to fetch around $NZ2.2 million ($1.8m).

The couple paid $NZ1.74 for the home in 2018, according to RNZ.

“Behind a crisp white fence on one of Sandringham’s prettiest streets, this timeless 1930s bungalow introduces itself with traditional weatherboard charm and a welcoming front porch,” the advertising material for the weatherboard home reads.

“Step inside, and the home unfolds to tell a beautiful story of evolution.

“A modern extension seamlessly bridges the gap between eras, transforming the traditional footprint into an airy, high-stud haven that frames green garden views through soaring windows.”

We revealed in February, that Ardern – who was the 40th prime minister of New Zealand and leader of the Labour Party from 2017 to 2023 – was considering the big move across The Ditch.

Back them Ardern, 45, and her television presenter husband Clarke Gayford were spotted looking at a couple of properties for sale in the beachside suburbs of Curl Curl and Freshwater and were also seen eating at a Mexican restaurant in Dee Why.

The old home has been modernised.

A spokesman for Ardern confirmed the family was settling in Australia for the time being.

“The family has been travelling for a few years now,” the spokesperson said.

“For the moment they are basing themselves out of Australia – they have work there, and it brings the added bonus of more time back home in New Zealand.”

The confirmation led to swift condemnation from New Zealanders.

Many people questioned why someone would move away from a country they supposedly loved enough to lead at one point.

“Isn’t this ironic…if you supposedly love a nation enough to rule it and invest your time developing it why would you leave? Certain people run away from the milk they spilt,” one person wrote.

“Of course she is looking at moving to Australia. The policies her woke agenda established has made living in New Zealand financially impossible,” another said.

“They are the only Kiwis she lifted out of poverty in NZ: Her, her husband, and her child. Well done, Jacinda, for looking after yourself and your family while leaving devastation behind for the rest of us Kiwis to pick up the mess you left us with to fix,” someone else comments.

Other readers jokingly suggested Ardern was simply in Australia to make a play for the top job Down Under.

“She’s going to challenge Albo in next election, making her the second female PM that will unite AU and NZ into one country,” one person commented.

In December last year, Gayford told a media outlet he would be looking for work but TV was a difficult industry and in New Zealand a small industry.

He recently produced a documentary on Jacinda, called Prime Minister, and presented a show called Fish of the Day. He has often spoken of his love of the ocean.

Ardern has been spending time at Dee Why on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

The couple appear to already be feeling well at home on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

“New Zealand continues to be the best place in the world but this is a wonderful place to be,” a typically diplomatic Ardern said in a recent Channel 9 interview.

“People have been very welcoming. The time has passed really quickly. I have enjoyed going to the beach and done a lot of writing.”

Ardern was also spotted onstage earlier this month at the 40th Anniversary ARIA Hall Of Fame Special Event at Carriageworks in Sydney.
