1/15 Marshall Ave, Kew, has been listed for sale by ex-Magpie Murray Browne.

Former Magpies footballer Murray Browne, brother of the club’s president Jeff, has listed a Kew bolthole for sale that up until recently had hosted AFL commentator Kane Cornes.

Browne played for Collingwood and Fitzroy Lions in the 1980s and son Alex later being drafted to Essendon Football Club in 2011.

He was also among the rare list of Magpies players to appear in an Anzac Day game played against a team other than Essendon, participating in the 1984 match between Carlton and Collingwood on the day that ended with the Pies winning by five points at Waverley Park.

While he and wife Lisa had initially planned to make it their home away from home while in Melbourne, they wound up renting it out.

Industry sources have revealed tenants seen at the property include Port Adelaide premiership player Cornes.

After multiple club best and fairests, and two appearances in the All-Australian team list in a career spanning from 2001-2015, Cornes has gone on to a prominent commentary role for the code.

Regular gigs for The Advertiser newspaper in Adelaide, as well as appearances on The Sunday Footy Show and SEN radio, helped him to a role in Seven Network’s commentary team that he’s held since 2024.

Browne would not discuss past tenants at the $1.05m-$1.15m home at 1/15 Marshall Ave, Kew, but said he had intended it as a city base as they increased the time they were spending on the Mornington Peninsula.

Having lived there themselves for a time after buying it about 3.5 years ago, he said it was a wonderful residence for a downsizer — though he also felt it would suit a younger couple, too.

“It’s almost a house, as it’s got three bedrooms and they’re all good-sized rooms,” Browne said.

“And Kew is a great location, and we brought out kids up not far away.

“So the property is great, we are just not using it enough.”

The former Magpie added that having played in one of the pre-Essendon Anzac Day matches had always felt like a special moment for him.

A courtyard garden provides space to relax in fine weather.

“There was a big hooha about doing it — even Sunday football was a bit of a no no back then,” Browne said.

“But then 85,000 people were there and it was just huge. We did the Last Post before the game, and it was such a great event — but society just wasn’t ready for footy to be played on public holidays then.

“And we just won on the day.”

Jellis Craig’s Patrick Dennis is handling the sale and said with 1960s white-brick charm, colonial-style windows and most of the features people wanted from a house just a bit smaller, the home had a “bit of character” about it.

Expansive bedrooms help give the unit a house-sized feel.

A mix of downsizers and mid-career professionals have been showing interest so far.

“It’s people who like the area, and downsizers who live locally and are already comfortable with everything here,” Mr Dennis said.

Unit 1 at 15 Marshall Ave, Kew, goes to auction at 11am on May 9.
