Ex-ABC boss Michelle Guthrie buys new $10m Sydney home

Former ABC managing director Michelle Guthrie has upgraded her Palm Peach weekender with a $9.9m hilltop purchase.

It was the longtime family retreat of the late NSW governor Dame Marie Bashir. The property was exchanged last October and settled in late March after Dame Marie died in January.

The Pacific Rd ridgeline offering, with views of the ocean and Pittwater, came with a classic home on its level 1265sq m block. The two-level home, with an expansive north-facing deck, had been listed through LJ Hooker with $10m guidance.

Dame Marie and her late husband, former Wallabies captain and Sydney lord mayor Sir Nicholas Shehadie, had bought it for $1.026m in 1998.

Dame Marie, born in Narrandera, was the second-longest-serving governor, with 13 years in the role from 2001 to 2014.

She downsized to an Astor apartment building on Macquarie St just before the sale of their longtime Cremorne home for $7m in 2020.

Sir Nicholas, who died in 2018, and Dame Marie had purchased their Shellbank Ave home for $57,000 five decades earlier in 1968. They had married in 1957.

Guthrie, who recently announced her departure as non-executive director from Singapore operator StarHub, first bought at Palm Beach with husband, international chef Darren Farr, in 2003 when they paid $1.722m for a classic 1960s single storey house.

The modern five-bedroom, three-bathroom Bynya Rd house recently sold for $4.2m after four months on the market.

Set on an 809sq m parcel, the home came with a media room and study.

The home sits at the south end of Palmy.


PropTrack puts the current Palm Beach median at $5.675m after 40 house sales over the past year. The sales were achieved after a median of 81 days on market.

In 2008, when running Star, a pay TV outfit in Hong Kong, Guthrie and Farr paid $4.8m for an apartment on Sydney Wharf at Pyrmont with a $400,000 marina berth.
