Instead of the world’s athletes squeezing into their lycra costumes preparing for competition, it’s construction workers from Geelong contractor Draper’s Civil Contracting wearing hard hats and high-vis gear in their earthmoving cabs as civil works start on the first stages of the Waurn Ponds estate, dubbed Silverbrook.
Aussie athletes are instead preparing to travel to Glasgow, Scotland, next month where the Victorian taxpayer is paying for a scaled-back 10-sport Commonwealth Games program.

The Mount Duneed estate will deliver almost 400 new homes, including around 100 social and affordable homes.
The first release of eight lots offers home sites from 304sq m to 409sq m, plus a 605sq m triangular block.
Lot prices are expected to be from about $350,000.
The entire development straddles Baanip Blvd immediately south of the Waurn Ponds train station, where a future carpark and bus interchange will be constructed, along with a proposed local activity centre.

Sixteen streets will be created in the southern section of the development, with some homes facing a creekside reserve.
Development Victoria is partnering with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation on the design of the nature reserve.
Nearly 100 lots are shown on a masterplan for the development, with several large tracts reserved for social and affordable housing.
Silverbrook has been designed with access to open space, walking and cycling paths, and nearby retail centres, schools and public transport.

Civil construction work has started on the Silverbrook development south of Baanyip Blvd at Mount Duneed.
Development Victoria is also delivering the nearby Waurn Ponds Sports Complex the area on behalf of Sport and Recreation Victoria.
Works are under way on the precinct, which will include a multi-sports facility at the corner of Baanip Blvd and Ghazepore Rd.
Key transport upgrades will include a new signalised intersection on Baanip Blvd connecting to a bus interchange and a new commuter car park at Waurn Ponds Station – with works to begin later this year.
Planning for the northern parcel at Silverbrook along Muir Rd is progressing, with the full development expected to be delivered in stages through to 2031.
