Dolly Parton’s Very Quirky Former Hideaway Hits the Market in California for $2 Million—Complete With Its Own Windmill

A quaint—and very quirky—California property that once served as music legend Dolly Parton's private hideaway has returned to the market for just a hair under $2 million, just four years after it last changed hands.

Located "in the heart of" the Danish-inspired town of Solvang, the adorable mini compound, which still retains many of the features added by the country music star during her ownership, features three petite properties: a main residence and two rental units.

"This one-of-a-kind property features the country legend's original, authentic 'Wig Room,'" the listing for the home, which is being sold by its current owner, Chris Lapp, states.

A plaque stationed at the front of the dwelling proudly signals its impressive heritage as the "former home of Dolly Parton: singer, actress, and American icon," while a stained-glass window above the front door of the property's main residence features the legend's name, along with a butterfly.

However, one of the more eye-catching details at the front of the property has nothing to do with Parton at all, but rather pays tribute to Solvang's longstanding ties to Denmark and Europe: a miniature windmill that has been painted to match the home's distinctive gray, white, and red color palette.

Parton, 80, who resides primarily at her estate in Tennessee, which she shared with her late husband, Carl Dean, until his death in March 2025, is understood to have purchased the property in 2004—and she owned it for a decade, before quietly offloading it in 2014, when it sold for $940,000.

Lapp, who bought the property in 2022 for $1.3 million, explained to SFGate that he'd heard Parton was inspired to purchase the dwelling because it "reminded her of her grandmother's home."

Meanwhile, local resident and business owner Wes Leslie noted that the songstress may well have "hung on to" the dwelling as an "investment property," although he said it has also been rumored that she had family who used the home.

After he bought the home, Lapp spent a great amount of time restoring it to its original glory—and said that he has ensured the tenants who currently live in the rental units have not made any significant changes to its interiors, many of which he believes were curated by Parton herself, including several heart stencils on the walls.

Beyond the special touches that Parton incorporated throughout the home, the property features a number of very unique features across all of its spaces: a three-bedroom, two-bathroom main house, a three-bedroom, two-bathroom rear unit, and a one-bedroom lower unit, all of which offer "private patios and off-street parking."

Upon entry to the main residence, which has a cheerful red front door, visitors will find a bright, airy living room, a small, yet well-equipped kitchen, and three comfortable bedrooms.

The aforementioned "wig room" has been outfitted with an enormous mirror and a built-in vanity perfect for trying on different styles—however a future occupant could easily use this space as a flex room or office.

Featuring large windows throughout, the property gets ample natural light—while the sun-soaked patio space provides another charming area for guests to relax and kick back.

For those eager to turn their next property investment into a lucrative business opportunity, the home's impressive history as a successful rental will no doubt be one of its most appealing features. According to the list, it currently generates a "gross annual income of $116,000" via the rental units—which are both tenant-occupied.

"Perfectly positioned on a 0.26-acre corner lot near world-class tasting rooms and restaurants, this property offers the ultimate blend of convenience, privacy, and provenance," the listing notes.

"Currently tenant-occupied and generating steady returns, this is a rare opportunity for a savvy cash buyer to secure a trophy asset and long-term legacy property in the Santa Ynez Valley."

For others, it will be the opportunity to reside so close to the center of Solvang, which has long been a popular tourist attraction, thanks to its beautiful Danish-inspired architecture—which includes colorfully painted wooden storefronts and, of course, plenty of windmills.

Known as the "Danish capital of America," the city lures in more than one million tourists a year, generating around $9 million annual in hotel and sales tax revenue, according to the New York Post.

Local attractions—in addition to the architecture—include the surrounding vineyards, trolley rides through the city center, ghost tours, and the annual Danish heritage festival.

Interested parties may not want to wait long before inquiring, however; Lapp told SFGate that he has had a huge number of inquiries—although he admitted that at least some of those have come from people who just want to tour Parton's former property, joking that he is going to require an offer before allowing anyone inside.

Parton appears to be quite the boon for real estate listings; another of her former California retreats, an idyllic cabin in the aptly named town of Idyllwild, sold for $800,000 in April 2025, just one month after it was listed.

That mountainside sanctuary, and her late husband for decades before she decided to gift it to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California, which offloaded it in July 2024, according to records.

However, her ties to the petite property remain—a fact that the listing was quick to call attention to, describing the three-bedroom abode as "Dolly Parton's former Idyllwild retreat—a home as iconic as the legend herself."

"If walls could sing, this charming three-story mountain retreat would be belting out a country classic," the description continues, noting that "nearly everything inside remains just as Dolly left it."
