Former Victorian Premier Denis Napthine and his wife Peggy are selling their Kensington home fronting a historic stock run.

Mr Napthine was the last Liberal Premier for the state, taking over the office from Ted Baillieu when he resigned in 2013.

He was replaced by Daniel Andrews when Victoria went to the polls in 2014.

A trained vet, Mr Napthine joined politics in 1988 as the member for Portland.

He was the minister for Youth and Culture in Jeff Kennett’s government in the late 1990s and became leader of the Liberal Party after Kennett was voted from power in 1999.

Mr Napthine passed the torch to Robert Doyle after a challenge in 2002, but was returned to a cabinet role as Minister for Ports, Racing, Regional Cities and Major Projects by Mr Baillieu after the Liberals won the 2010 election.

While he has resigned from politics, Mr Napthine was among the high-profile former Liberals to financially support current opposition leader John Pesutto’s in his legal stoush with Moira Deeming.

Mr Napthine’s 14 Gardner Lane home in Kensington has been listed with a $1.175m-$1.275m asking price.

Records show he bought it in 2002 just a few years after it was built.

Nelson Alexander’s Ryan Currie would not discuss the home’s owner, but noted that the location fronting onto the suburb’s historic stock route was likely to make it well sought after.

The route, which still carried cattle until the 1990s, remains a pedestrian-only zone, with homes along it accessed by vehicle via the rear along Gardner Lane.

“It’s very quiet, as the only people who go down there are those who live there,” Mr Currie said.

“The street cricket would be awesome, and the locals love it.

“I have been selling homes in this area since 1999, and the ones down there always fare really well.”

The four-bedroom home is on a corner block that allows for extensive natural light throughout its multiple ground-floor living spaces and across its three-storey floorplan.

A rumpus room on the top floor features angular ceilings as well as north and south-facing windows.

A functional but still stylish kitchen includes granite benchtops, a 900mm freestanding Smeg oven and timber cabinetry.

The paved back garden offers a leafy escape. It also hosts a self-contained studio with its own kitchen and bathroom, as well as rear laneway access to a double garage.

It is walking distance to Kensington and North Melbourne’s shops and eateries, public transport and a number of public gardens and parks.

No. 14 Gardner Lane goes to auction at 12.30pm on December 7.
