When Queensland’s most-viewed property going to auction sold over the weekend, its new owner literally jumped into the swimming pool with joy.
The four-bedroom, one-bathroom house at 39 Sibley Rd, Wynnum West, was the fourth most-viewed property up for a weekend auction across all of Australia.
At 883 sqm in size and spread across two blocks, the home belonged to a buyers agent who had upgraded the home since they bought it in 2020.
39 Sibley Rd, Wynnum West, was Queensland’s most-viewed home going up for auction on the first weekend after Easter.
Its winning bidder was so happy to secure the home for her family that she literally leapt into the pool after the auction finished.
The home had seen a crowd of 40 gather for the auction, with one family managing to score the 883 sqm home.
The home soon found around 60 groups going through the property over its campaign, ran by McGrath agents Gaby and Alec McEwan.
“People are always attracted to a big block of land, an elevated garden and a big pool,” Ms McEwan said. “I think it just presented an opportunity that had lots of options.”
Owner-occupiers across Brisbane took an interest in the home, and by the time the auction took place on April 11, a crowd of around 40 potential buyers and neighbours had gathered to see where the sale would land.
The house sat on the border of Wynnum and Wynnum West, and saw around 60 groups throughout its open homes.
Two registered bidders and one conditional buyer were eager to score the home on the day, though two quickly backed out after a starting bid of $1.5m.
The home had three major parties present on the day: a conditional buyer who had not entered the bidding process, and two registered bidders eager to secure the home for themselves.
But when bidding opened at $1.5 million, two out of the three contenders could not keep up. Soon, private negotiations began with the one remaining bidder, the mum of a local family who intended to move into the home.
Before she knew it, the home had gone to her family for a final sale price of $1.85m – and the news made her so excited that she jumped into the house’s pool.
The home finally sold for $1.85m, to a family intending to renovate and live in the property.
”It was difficult to keep the contract dry; they kept dripping over it!”
“That’s never happened to me in 20 years of real estate, but that was a brilliant moment,” Ms McEwan said. “It was difficult to keep the contract dry; they kept dripping over it!”
Ms McEwan said the relocating vendors were happy with the outcome, and the new family had already shown the home to a builder friend of theirs.
“I think they’re going to do some work to fit it for their family, and personalise it; maybe raise the space,” Ms Mc Ewan said. “[Everyone] very much wanted it for the big garden and the timeless appeal. It’s a very romantic house.”
