Michael Baker and wife Sasha wanted to push the boundaries when it came to designing and building their dream home in Brisbane.
The couple, who has three adult children, recently completed a mammoth renovation on their Camp Hill house after purchasing the original property in 2018.
Bowen House at 88 Waverly Rd, Camp Hill.
Bowen House has an indoor-outdoor flow.
“We liked the weatherboard and terracotta look to properties and were also very keen to preserve the architecture of the streets in Brisbane,” said Mr Baker, a builder who runs MR Baker Design & Renovation.
“We wanted to demonstrate architecturally what could be done with that sort of property.
“I don’t like how a lot of homes are just being torn down, and having a background in architecture before becoming a builder, I saw an opportunity to showcase a new type of architecture in Brisbane.”

The British Colonial-inspired home, now on the market with Place Woolloongabba’s James Curtain, includes five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a string of luxury features from a 280-bottle wine cellar to a showstopper pool and outdoor kitchen.
Mr Baker described the finished home as “spectacular”.
“We basically kept the existing structure, lifted it up, build underneath and extended out the back,” Mr Baker said.
“It’s four times as big as the original footprint.
“Most people think we got rid of the house but it’s there.”

Designed for multi-generational living, the home features several different living zones with meticulous attention to detail.
“We decided to build it so someone of our age could live here forever,” Mr Baker said.
“You could be upstairs and have the master suit and as you age, because we built another master suit downstairs, you could live down there and lock off upstairs.
“Or you could have family upstairs and guests or grandparents or an au pair downstairs.”

Mr Baker said the Brisbane market was struggling to keep pace with buyer demand.
“The feedback you get is that housing is in very short supply and in particular the prestige market,” he said.
“If you’ve got a good block and good location, it should be commanding a premium.
“I imagine a number of people don’t want to go through the hassle of dealing with architecture, town planners, certification and that sort of stuff and want a beautiful turnkey property to just walk into.
“You could be sitting here in the pool by Christmas time.”
Expressions of interest close December 2.
