The underground concrete bunker at 74 Combridge Drive, Beremboke.

A Victorian property with a concrete survival bunker that wouldn’t look out of place in a disaster film is for sale with a $1.1m price tag.

Set on a 15.16ha landholding in Beremboke, a small town about 94km from Melbourne and 19km from Anakie, the address also features two houses.

The 74 Combridge Drive listing is ideal for buyers keen on becoming largely self-sufficient thanks to its dam, multiple water tanks, solar panels, large workshop, double garage and extensive storage facilities.

Ray White Bacchus Marsh’s Belinda Lewin said the dedicated survival bunker had been installed by the abode’s former owners in case of a bushfire.

Ms Lewin said it was not uncommon for rural and regional properties to have a dedicated bunker or similar structure for people to retreat to, or store their personal belongings, in case of a fire.

“In here, they’ve got masks, water bottles and tinned food,” she added.

There’s also an oxygen tank in the bunker, which is about 1m or so below ground.

While bunkers were once been a rarity at Victorian private homes, they have grown in popularity since the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009.

More than 20 properties across the state with bunkers, including bushfire shelters, are currently listed for sale across suburban Melbourne, plus regional and rural locations, at realestate.com.au.

Both houses on the 15.16ha property formerly served as local schools.

The main house has a renovated kitchen with an island bench and wall ovens.

Earlier in May, a study for financial comparison website Money.com.au, conducted by Primara Research, revealed almost to one in six Australians have made changes to their home in response to global instability such as the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran.

More than a third of those surveyed stated they were planning to make their homes more independent when it came to sourcing energy, water and food.

Ms Lewin said one buyer had described the shelter as “pretty cool” although most potential purchasers have been keen on escaping the small, close-together homes in Melbourne’s newer suburban estates.

“They’re mostly tree-changers – people wanting to get out of town and have space, animals and a hobby farm,” she said.

“There’s also a dam here and lots of natural wildlife, such as kangaroos.”

There’s a second house on the address which the former owners rented out.

One of the bathrooms offers a spa bath.

The second residence could serve as short-term rental accommodation, or home to an older relative or adult children, she noted.

Ms Lewin said the two houses had previously been local schools before being relocated to Combridge Drive.

“They have been moved there and had some significant renovations done,” she added.

The main three-bedroom abode’s kitchen, floors and carpets have all been updated by the current owners.

An exposed brick feature wall and a wood fireplace add character to the living area, while the kitchen is equipped with an island bench and wall ovens.

Other highlights include a deck, study and main bedroom suite with a walk-in wardrobe.

The second house, also with three bedrooms, includes a central bathroom, separate toilet, mudroom and laundry.

Ms Lewin said Beremboke was a popular stopover for people travelling to Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne.

The property is for sale via expressions of interest.
