Three major Queensland cities are among the most expensive in Australia to build a home.

New data revealed Townsville topped the country’s list as the most expensive, with construction costs hitting $3,300 per square metre.

This north Queensland city also had the highest increase in construction costs over the past year at 6 per cent.

Compare the Market analysed the average construction price for residential buildings per square metre, and the change in construction costs over twelve months for 67 cities across the globe to create a ranking of the most expensive cities to build a home.

Brisbane construction costs hit $2,966.67 per square metre, up 5 per cent, while Gold Coast costs also hit $2,966.67, up 4.9 per cent

Townsville costs ranked No. 22 in the world, while Brisbane and Gold Coast were No. 30 and 31n respectively.

Perth came in second on the national list with an the average cost per square metre of $3,100 in the Western Australian capital.

Melbourne construction costs hit $2,766.67 per square metre, up 4 per cent, while Darwin hit $2,566.67 a square metre, up 5 per cent.

Surprisingly, Sydney was one of the cheaper Australian cities, costing $2,500 per square metre, with an increase of 4.3 per cent in construction costs in the past twelve months, despite it being Australia’s largest city.

Adelaide showed be a more cost-effective location for building, ranking 42nd globally, with Canberra ranking 45th, the cheapest of any Australian city on the list.

The most expensive cities to build in the world included Hong Kong, SAR ($8,800 per square metre), Honolulu, USA ($4,777.67 per square metre) and Portland, USA ($4,742.72 per square metre).

The cheapest include Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam ($728.87 per square metre), Manila, Philippines, ($695.49 per square metre) and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia ($387.20 per square metre).
