Australia’s hottest properties: Buyers fall for bold statement homes in October

20 hours ago 1

Vintage character has its place, but visitors to realestate.com.au last month were all about modern homes boasting space, size and plenty of show-off features.

Big, bold and beautiful — and ideally beachside. That's the vibe that had realestate.com.au visitors buzzing in October, with some jaw-dropping modern mansions in prime spots stealing the spotlight and clicks.

From a glamorous family resort on the Gold Coast to an idyllic rural escape near Geelong, an inner-Melbourne status symbol and a luxe beachside pad on the NSW Central Coast, there was no shortage of dream homes to get you swooning.

Not all were grand though. Smaller gems made the top eight too, including a $1m-plus Gold Coast apartment with ocean views and a starter home in Geelong needing a bit of love.

Half of the top 12 were in or near capital cities, the rest near popular regional hubs close to the capitals that have become increasingly popular in recent years.

Four of them were in Victoria, three in Queensland, three in New South Wales, one in Western Australia, and one in South Australia. Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the ACT didn’t crack the top 20.

Here's a look at the beauties causing a stir with buyers and dreamers alike.

Beachside apartment on exclusive Gold Coach strip

It's unusual for an apartment to be the most-viewed home of the month, but it's not every day you have the chance to grab a slice of Gold Coast beachfront for around $1m.

This cute and charming two-bedroom pad at 4/238 Jefferson Lane, Palm Beach may be compact but it's steps from the sand, full of light, has killer sea views, and is beautifully renovated while retaining some endearing vintage character.

"When you're putting something up around the million-dollar mark and you've got a view like that, everyone's like, 'Wow, where is that?'," said agent Ed Cherry at Coastal, who reported a steady flow of interest.

Rural acreage outside Geelong

'Strathmile' is the kind of rural retreat that most people want these days: a slice of country life yet on the outskirts of town. But with nearly 150 acres, 204 Andersons Road, Barrabool is the real deal.

There are vast lawns and plenty of space for the kids, but also room for cattle, sheep and horses — among the stunning rolling hills of Barrabool.

The accommodation is wonderful too, with an elegant and modern four-bedroom residence complete with deck, pergola and pool, plus two guesthouse studios just a garden boardwalk away.

Agent Matt Poustie at HF Richardson said the home was guided at $5.35m-$5.75m, which had attracted "a phenomenal response" from local, interstate and overseas buyers.

"It's a beautiful place, with unreal views and fantastic paddocks. A special property like this doesn't come up very often."

Contemporary beachfront beauty on NSW Central Coast

Australia's east coast is hardly short of contemporary beachfront mansions but this one at 57 Ocean View Drive, Wamberal is a standout.

With six bedrooms, most with private balconies, and seven bathrooms, this sleek and luxurious house showcases three terraces, dramatic ocean views, a geothermal heated pool, private gym, media room — among many other impressive features.

Agent Mat Steinwede at McGrath Terrigal has withheld the guide price but his office said there's been plenty of interest.

Gold Coast family fun park

This high-tech mountain compound with uninterrupted Gold Coast views at 160 Tallai Road, Tallai is pure luxury, featuring a private theme park, Manhattan-style whiskey bar and a gold-tiled infinity pool.

It's already drawn huge attention - becoming the fourth most-viewed home of October, despite only going on the market in the final days of the month.

Gaining huge media exposure, it's the home of former AFL player turned tech millionaire Brad Moran, who said he wanted to "push every boundary of what was possible" when it came to engineering and beauty.

Mr Moran and his wife Alicia purchased the already-flashy estate for $7m in 2021 and spent four years transforming it. The estate now boasts 10 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a 110m go-kart track, golf driving range, basketball court, 16-seat cinema, poker room, and a wellness wing.

After all that effort, the couple and their three children have chosen not to enjoy it, opting instead to upsticks, travel and homeschool the kids.

Agent Michael Kollosche said the property, which has no official guide price, had garnered interest from around the country.

"The level of detail is incredible. It's a unique lifestyle offering and something to be enjoyed," he said.

Modern Melbourne mansion

It's not common in inner Melbourne to find a spacious brand-new home with six bedrooms and seven bathrooms on 1,136sqmm with a pool, full-sized tennis court, gym with infrared sauna plus a separate second residence.

That's why this stylish and spacious sanctuary at 13 Allambee Avenue, Camberwell was snapped up in just 13 days for over $8m, said agent Mike Beardsley at Jellis Craig Boroondara.

"With the north rear tennis court, 14m pool with clear glass wall, large open-plan living areas with lots of natural light, plus good indoor-outdoor connection over two levels, it just ticked a lot of boxes for buyers," he said.

Deep waterfront eco-home

This is celebrity landscaper and TV personality Jamie Durie's stunning seven-level eco-home at 189 Riverview Road, Avalon Beach, famous for its chemical-free, drinkable swimming pool.

With the family decamping to a 30-hectare farm in the Byron Bay hinterland, their spectacular home is listed with a guide of $33m.

For that you get resort-style living, cascading native gardens and breathtaking Pittwater views. Highlights include a rooftop garden with ancient grass trees, a dedicated wellness zone, private beach access with a deep waterfront jetty and ramp — plus the ability to live off grid with remarkably low utility bills.

Agent James Baker at McGrath Pittwater said there's been a lot of interest in the property.

"It's a very special home, so much thought has been put into the environment," he said. "And on the upper Northern Beaches, it's very hard to find a house of this calibre that's completely finished — and that also has the ecosense. It's exclusive, private and literally unpack your bags and enjoy."

Budget-friendly starter home with structural fault

An outlier on this list of dream homes, this original three-bedroom, one-bathroom house on a 590sqm level block at 16 Fisher Avenue, Belmont in Geelong was the eighth most-viewed home this month, with a 'bargain' price tag of $400,000-$440,000.

But there was a catch - a crack in the concrete slab was declared as a fault that would need to be rectified.

The crack itself was estimated to cost between $30,000 and $40,000, but the unknown damage that would come from repairing the foundation led to the property being priced at land value.

Despite this, agent Kin Sawhney at Hayeswinckle Geelong said the home attracted hordes of first-home buyers and investors, before selling to an investor for $635,000 at auction.

He said there was immense demand for affordable homes in the area, especially given the expansion of the federal government's Home Guarantee Scheme from October 1.

"Anything under $600,000 is getting a lot of traction, but anything under $500,000 is really flying."
