Adelaide a favourite in ‘best Australian city to live in’ debate

The best Australian city to live in has long been debated but a passionate discussion among the people may have finally settled it.

Adelaide was a clear favourite in an online forum on reddit posing the question to Aussies, which was met with hundreds of responses stating their strong feelings.

Many agreed its affordability, laid-back lifestyle and wineries on offer were some of its highlights.

“Done the big lap and have stayed in every capital multiple times. I love living in Adelaide,” one said.

“My hot take is that Adelaide is criminally underrated and unfairly maligned,” another said after explaining it was a subjective question and dependant on what one was looking for in a home.

While many raged about Adelaide, others didn’t think it was anything special.

“If you like not having a reason to ever leave your house, then go for Adelaide,” one person said.

Others urged Adelaide residents to keep quiet so as not to spread the word about how great it is.

“Pipe down! You’re leaking state secrets!,” one said, followed by, “No shhh, Adelaide sucks”, from another.

“It was great until the eastern states stopped ragging on it, realised it’s a lovely place to live, started moving in droves and made it extremely expensive,” another said.

“There’s always been no jobs but now there’s no jobs and ridiculously expensive housing for the average wage. Beautiful city though.”

According to latest PropTrack data, Adelaide’s median house price is $855,000 after climbing 32.1 per cent over the past three years, while the median unit price sits at $615,000 following 46.4 per cent growth over the same period.

Perth was also a popular city, with many explaining it was similar to Adelaide, but some locals claimed it “totally sucks here” and was overrated, while others said it was too isolated.

While Adelaide appeared to be the frontrunner, many other people presented their case for other cities.

SA’s wineries and the easy access to them are one of the main reasons Aussies think Adelaide is such a great place to live.

“Adelaide and Perth are best places to live but Melbourne/Sydney/Brizzy/Tasmania are the best places to experience, each for different reasons and climates,” one said.

“Can’t go wrong with any of the capital cities,” replied another.

“Perth if you prefer a warm Mediterranean climate with great beaches, Adelaide for wineries, Brisbane for the tropical forests, Melbourne for a European vibe and nightlife, Sydney for big city New York-style vibes.”

Sydney and Melbourne were loved for their vibrancy and “cosmopolitan city vibes” but were considered too expensive.

Some suggested Brisbane for the “decent weather, lower stress, and don’t need big-city chaos every day” lifestyle, but the “sickly” heat and humidity was also why some didn’t like it.

Sydney has a median house price of $1.455m and a median unit price of $810,000, PropTrack data shows.

Brisbane’s prices are hot on its heels, at $980,000 and $706,000 respectively, followed by Melbourne’s ($830,000 and $608,000) and Perth’s ($825,000 and $595,000).
