90s Neighbours stars now: Property, loss and exes

1 month ago 15

They started on the modest streets of Ramsay Street, earning a few hundred dollars a week but have come a long way since then to become some of the biggest names and biggest earners in Australia.

These former Aussie soap stars have turned their humble beginnings on Neighbours into impressive real estate portfolios and serious wealth.

Here’s how the Erinsborough favourites became property power players.

Kylie Minogue

Estimated Net Worth: $185 million

Kylie Minogue is arguably Neighbours’ most famous alumni. She reportedly earned a mere $280 per episode playing mechanic Charlene Robinson from 1986-1988.

Over the years, the singer and actress and Aussie icon has made a number of savvy property moves around Australia and the world.

In 2012, Kylie sold sold her two-bedroom house in Armadale for $1.715 million, which she bought for $185,000 in April 1990.

In 2022, Princess of Pop subsequently forked out $8.71 million on a four-bedroom house in Melbourne’s east, which features an eight-car garage, wine cellar and vegetable garden.

Minogue also owns a $25 million penthouse at One Hyde Park in London, which is understood to be in one of the world’s most-expensive apartment buildings.

Liam Hemsworth

Estimated Net Worth: $38 million

Liam Hemsworth started out on Neighbours, playing Josh Taylor from 2007 to 2008.

The Aussie heart-throb has made some property plays in both the US and Australia.

In 2020, the Hunger Games star sold his 7.4 acre Malibu estate that he shared with ex-wife Miley Cyrus for the “bargain” price of $US3.6 million ($A4.9 million) – almost half of what he bought it for in 2014.

The cut rate price is due to the Woolsey Fire that ravaged the area and the home in 2018, burning it almost to the ground.

Back in 2014, when the Dressmaker actor bought the property for $US6.8 million ($A9.3 million), the estate included “a long driveway that meandered over a gurgling creek, an updated 1950s ranch-style house, a recording studio, detached writing studio, concrete barn, and a big grassy lawn.

Following in his brother Chris’ footsteps, Liam created his own slice of paradise in the Byron Bay hinterland.

The youngest Hemsworth brother forked out $6.5 million for the former wedding venue, Newrybar Downs, tucked away in the hotspot of Newrybar.

The sale broke the local price record at the time by $2.1 million, but had been bought by the vendors in 2013 for just $1.8 million. Prior to Hemsworth’s purchase, the wedding venue had been available to rent for $9000 for a three-night minimum.

At the time of purchase, Liam’s 3.87ha property had a five-bedroom, four-bathroom luxury residence on site with two wings framing a large in-ground swimming pool.

Despite throwing millions at the Newrybar home on Johnston Rd, the Expendables 2 star is simultaneously renovating another slice of paradise nearby.

He reportedly submitted building plans to the local council in 2024 with what was estimated to be approximately $15 million worth of building works.

His plans, by Melbourne architect firm SSdH include a pavilion-style dual-level home that seeks to blend itself into the countryside, unlike his brother’s palace.

It will feature two open plan living areas, five bedrooms all with ensuites, a rumpus room that sits around an internal courtyard, a huge cabana, terrace, gym, sauna and 18m pool.

Guy Pearce

Estimated Net Worth: $38 million

Years before he got his big break in films The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and L.A. Confidential, Guy Pearce was an original member of the Neighbours cast.

The Geelong-raised actor played Mike Young from 1986 to 1989.

The Count of Monte Cristo star has made several moves in the Aussie real estate market.

In 2022, Pearce sold a secluded property outside Anakie that he bought as a family retreat.

The five-bedroom home had been listed for $1.05m-$1.15m – less than the $1.2m the Jack Irish star paid for it in April 2021 – but was snapped up for $1.27 million.

It meant Pearce sold the residence for only $70,000 more than he paid for. With buying and selling costs, including stamp duty, it’s likely the property sold at a loss.

The sprawling home is built on a hillside with turrets, walls of glass and seven decks and verandas to take in the bushland views.

The corrugated iron estate is split into three interconnecting pods.

Pearce never got the opportunity to take up residence in the home as work commitments picked up during the pandemic.

A year later, the Hollywood star offloaded his longtime Melbourne abode. The Middle Park house was snapped up for $8.65 million.

Pearce purchased two Edwardian-era properties, in 1995 and 2004, and connected them to create the one expansive home.

Joined at the centre with a central glass breezeway, the abode features leadlight windows, an office and sliding stacked doors which open to the garden with a fire pit and deck

Holly Valance

Estimated Net Worth: $30.8 million

Holly Valance was cast in Neighbours as Felicity “Flick” Scully in 1999. She left the series in 2002 to pursue a music career and scored a hit with Kiss Kiss.

The Aussie actress recently split from her property tycoon husband Nick Candy after 13 years of marriage.

The pair have a vast portfolio, including One Hyde Park — made up of 86 luxury apartments in central London — worth just over £1 billion ($A2.09 billion).

Candy owns a duplex penthouse in the luxe complex. The five-bedroom apartment covers the building’s 10th and 11th floors.

In 2021, Candy listed the unit for £175 million ($A340 million), making it the most expensive apartment in London. Four years later, it remains on the market.

The former couple reportedly forked out £8.5 million ($A18 million) on an Oxfordshire estate in 2021.

The sprawling seven-bedroom property has its own chapel, as well as a swimming pool, stables, tennis and squash courts.

In 2018, Candy bought a LA mansion from his brother Christian.

Known as “The Reserve”, the 10-bedroom Holmby Hills estate features 18-bathrooms, a guesthouse, a bar, gym, spa, and a huge playroom with a children’s slide and ball pit.

Outdoors, there is a swimming pool, hot tub, tennis court, grand pavilion and seven water features and fountains.

Candy listed the property for an eye-popping $US85 million ($A126 million) in 2022. It is still on the market, now with a $US10 million ($A15 million) price cut.

Jason Donovan

Estimated Net Worth: $15 million

Jason Donovan became a household name when he shot to fame on Neighbours playing Scott Robinson from 1986 to 1988.

During the height of his Neighbours heart-throb days, Donovan bought a two-bedroom property in Burnley, Melbourne in 1987 for $77,000.

It is understood his on-and-off screen lover Kylie Minogue made regular visits to the home.

Donovan’s old pad included two large bedrooms, an open-plan living area and sunny rear courtyard. He sold the house in 1994 for $970,000.

In 2019, the actor and singer offloaded a Toorak mansion for an undisclosed price within its $8.2-$9 million price tag.

The property was previously home to 1980s heart-throb Donovan, his wife, former stage manager Angela Malloch and their three children.

The five-bedroom English Tudor-style residence includes a large modern kitchen, study, media room, heated lap pool and children’s retreat.

Donovan’s old mansion was surrounded by large hedges and had a security gate for plenty of privacy.

That same year, the MDA star sold his Bondi Beach “party pad” apartment a day after it passed in on a vendor bid of $2.25 million.

The actor’s best mate, film producer Jonathan Shteinman, had won the three-bedroom unit for him at auction in 1994 for $451,000.

Two of the bedrooms have beach views. There’s a modern kitchen with integrated appliances.

Donovan had been collecting $1700 per week in rent prior to the tenants moving on.

Shteinman, who owned the apartment next door to Donovan’s, told the Wentworth Courier at the time the pad was listed that it was the scene of many parties.

“We joined both the apartments and had some pretty wild parties during the mid-90s,” he recalled.

“He was going out with Erica Baxter for a number of years, who became Mrs Packer, we had Kylie Minogue stay occasionally.”

Donovan and his family now live in a mansion in Kensington in London worth about $10 million.

Peter O’Brien

Estimated Net Worth: Unknown

Peter O’Brien played Shane Ramsay in Neighbours from 1985 to 1987.

Last year, the X-Men Origins: Wolverine actor’s Adelaide family home of almost 60 years was sold.

The Glenelg property came up just short of the White Collar Blue star’s desired price at its October auction last year but sold after some negotiations for $1.47m.

Presented in largely original condition, the four-bedroom, two-bathroom home sits on a 418 sqm allotment just moments from the beach and Glenelg’s prized amenities.

O’Brien’s late parents Betty and Jack bought the home as a holiday house in the mid-’60s while the family were living on a farm in Tailem Bend, eventually moving into the property while Peter was at school and university.

The actor took ownership of the home when the last of his parents passed away a decade ago.

In 2022, Moloney sold his luxurious Mornington Peninsula acreage a week before the beloved Australian show was originally axed.

The sprawling Merricks property sold for an undisclosed price between $6m and $6.3m on February 25.

Seven days later, on March 3, news broke that the show would cease production after 37 years after UK-based Channel 5 announced plans to cut it from their scheduling.

The actor and his wife Alison had lived at the four-bedroom residence since 2015, enjoying the property’s pool, gym, half basketball court, barn, riding arena and stables.

A study, north-facing outdoor entertaining area, main bedroom with an ensuite and dressing room, a dam, an orchard, a chook pen, and 280,000L of water storage were all included in the property package.

Blair McDonough

Estimated Net Worth: $4 million

Blair McDonough rose to fame on the first season of Big Brother in 2001 when he was 19.

That same year, the former reality star was cast on Neighbours playing Stuart Parker for five years. He briefly reprised his role in 2018.

A “mate” of McDonough’s told Woman’s Day the actor lived in luxury with his wife Kristi Townley and their two children in Melbourne after investing his money in property.

“He is sitting on a couple of million dollars’ worth of property, and lives off his investments in between acting gigs,” the friend claimed.

Last year, McDonough and his wife listed their Suffolk Park beach house just outside of Byron Bay. The property has a $3.8m to $4.18m price guide.

The Melbourne couple bought it in 2016, when they paid $940,000 for a two-bedroom cottage, which they have since transformed into a luxury entertainer.

The home has been extended, with three bedrooms in the main house and another bedroom in a granny flat.
