Hollywood star Zac Efron is planning to build “the most sustainable home in the world” on the NSW/Queensland border.

The Daily Telegraph real estate writer Jonathan Chancellor reports that the Iron Claw star has lodged a development application for the northern NSW property.

The off-grid home is described as a ‘Futurecave’ eco-home at Tomewin, just below the NSW border about 10km drive from Coolangatta and Tweed Heads.

The planned home will cover 830 sqm and comes with a $2.65m build cost.

It will features six bedrooms in a two storey house with a series of “pods” – made of hemp board panels – connected by a covered walkway.

The home has been designed by architect Frank Burridge at Main Studio.

“Pods are dispersed on the site to celebrate the landscape, reduce building bulk, encourage connection to outdoors and frame key views,” the application said, which describes it as a “carbon-sequestering, habitat-creating home.”

Efron purchased land Northern NSW in 2020.

The property sits just below the Qld border outside of Tweed Heads.

There will be a green roof that retains water to support local endangered butterflies and fireflies.

Efron bought the very private 128 hectare lot in December 2020 for $2m.

Settlement records confirm the property with its own rainforest was purchased in the name of Zachary David Alexander Efron for $2m after it sold at a December auction.

The Daily Telegraph reported at the time, Efron took ownership of the property without any registered mortgage, suggesting it was paid in full with cash.

The property is a nature lover’s paradise with it possessing three creeks and waterfalls.

There is also spectacular views of Mount Warning and plenty of cliffs and valleys to hike.

Zac Efron already has an affinity with Northern NSW after he rented a $22m mansion in Byron Bay in 2020 while dating local waitress Vanessa Valladares.

He will join fellow Hollywoods stars Chris and Liam Hemsworth owning a home in Northern NSW, if the application is successful.

The Hemsworth brothers have made Byron Bay something of their own after buying significant amounts of land outside of the town.
