A young homebuyer has made the perfect start on the property ladder in securing a three-bedroom Edwardian era house on the doorstep of East Geelong’s shopping village.
The character home on a corner block at 289 Myers St, East Geelong, sparked plenty of interest leading up to the auction, with as many as six potential buyers showing strong interest, prompting agents to raise the reserve price to $660,000.
That decision was rewarded as competition between two parties took the price from a $600,000 opening bid to sell for $680,000.

Maxwell Collins listing agent Meika Gunning said another two potential buyers attended Saturday’s auction, and the other two followed up later to see whether there was a chance to negotiate.
She said the location was the main drawcard for the buyer, but the house also provided the opportunity to add value.
“The house itself was of good size internally, so good sized bedrooms, great sized kitchen, and it had the north-facing courtyard,” Ms Gunning said.
“But there was some opportunity. The price was reflective of giving people the capacity to go in and make the changes that suited them.
“There’s not a lot that comes up in East Geelong, or if it does it’s at that next level.
“This has obviously had some love since it was built, but just not to the same extent as a lot of the others.”
Auctioneer Shaun Carroll said the character was there for all to see, with high ceilings, intricate fretwork and polished floorboards.
“This home is perfect for first-home buyers, investors, downsizers and anyone looking to secure a home in such a sought-after location here in East Geelong,” Mr Carroll said.
“When people buy property, a high percentage of their decision is based on location, and that is certainly the case here. We’ve got Ormond Rd and the Garden St shops, the cafes, the post office where there is plenty on offer.
“We’ve got Geelong High School just around the corner on Ryrie St, the hospital is only a short walk from here, we’ve got the Botanic Gardens and the beautiful waterfront and the Geelong CBD with everything it has to offer – the restaurants, the cafes, shopping centres or maybe where you work.
“It is all on your doorstep. That is fantastic convenience.”
