When one woman woke up this morning, she had no idea she’d be winning an auction for a new apartment; but that’s exactly what she did just hours later.

1-42 Roseby Ave, Clayfield

Unit 1 at 42 Roseby Ave, Clayfield, went up for auction on Saturday morning, with 12 registered bidders attending with their eyes on the home.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment was first put on the market after 40 years, with two floors for buyers to rent, move into or renovate.

With a starting bid of $800,000, Ray White Metro North agent Ashley Robinson said ten active bidders put their hat in the ring to secure the home.

“They all had a bid at different stages – some had a couple,” he said. “I’d say [it was] probably a dozen bids.”

A dozen bidders were eager to grab up the property, which had not been for sale for more than four decades.

Rising by offers of $10,000 a time, the number soon narrowed down to $5,000 – before the winner snagged the home for $910,000.

This was $50,000 over the reserve price the old owners had set for the home.

“[They were] ecstatic,” Mr Robinson said. “They’re sad they’re losing a family home, but happy someone else is going to be enjoying the property.”

The buyer was having her morning tea when she discovered the home, and arrived to bid with barely a minute to spare.

Mr Robinson said the winning bidder arrived at the last minute, and had her husband walk through the home as she registered to bid.

“The lady was actually sitting at home, having a coffee when she saw the auction on realestate.com.au,” he said. “Never saw it before … she knew it was a good property, and said she had to buy it.”

The new buyer intends to keep the home for herself or her family, but is not sure what she’ll specifically do with the place just yet.

But it wasn’t the only surprise that day – the original Italian developer who had built the apartments showed up to watch the sale.

“He just wanted to see how they were standing up after all this time,” Mr Robinson said. “He thought it was great.”
