“The size of the site permits 14 dwellings, but we decided to go with 10 and just build on one side of the rivulet so that we could keep the other side as private parkland,” says Earl.

Award-winning Tasmanian architects Cumulus Studio thoughtfully embedded the buildings into the hillside, choosing curved exteriors and a material palette including natural stone, timber and steel.

“We want the buildings to sit quietly and elegantly within the landscape,” says Earl.

“To feel as though they belong here. Building with integrity is also crucial to that – using raw, honest materials that will develop character over time.”

Sustainability was integral to the design – from the thermally broken windows to Australian-sourced marble and the avoidance of powder coatings.

“We were thrilled to find a marble we love that’s quarried in Australia, rather than being shipped in from overseas,” she adds.

With curved exteriors and natural materials, Grace is designed to be a calming, sustainable sanctuary.


Landscape as centrepiece

If the architecture is understated, the landscape is the true protagonist.

Local firm Inspiring Place has crafted a garden experience that feels both wild and refined – a considered mix of native species, flowering herbs, climbing vines and sculptural boulders that frame the pathways and communal spaces.

“They’ve worked with this really beautiful native palette but brought in some formality in the design of the spaces and the planting layout,” says Earl.

A footbridge arches over the rivulet, connecting residences to a pedestrian path from Maning Avenue.

Elsewhere, spaces for quiet reflection and communal gathering are gently woven through the site.

Grace directly adjoins McAulay Reserve, enhancing the sense of immersion in nature and creating a seamless extension of the surrounding treescape.
