35 Werona Ave, Killara comes with a saltwater pool shielded by high hedges.

A Killara residence commissioned in the 1930s for the Hardy winemaking family goes under the hammer this month with a $4m price guide.

The brick Art Deco home on 1239sqm of land with north-to-rear aspect and close to Killara station was built for the Hardys but has been lived in for more than 60 years by the Milson family.

Land title records show Kathleen Eleanor Hardy, wife of Kenneth Thomas Hardy, paid £788 in 1932 for the land, but there’s no record of what the Milsons paid for the home in the 1960s.

Thomas Hardy arrived in Australia in 1850 and is regarded as the father of wine in South Australia. Hardys Wine are best known for ageworthy reds and especially the Thomas Hardy cabernet sauvignon.

The grand lounge.

Although the Hardy family was based in Adelaide a couple of family members did live in Sydney for a while to manage distribution in NSW.

The mostly single-level home at 35 Werona Ave has five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a grand lounge, a drinks room, high ceilings and hardwood floors.

Early craftsmanship include period fireplaces, the drive-through portico and signature curves.

Full of charm.

After the Milsons bought it in the 1960s, daughter Anne Milson said favourite rooms included the sunroom with bay window and lower-level utility rooms which supported the family’s hobbies.

“My brother was a photographer, and one of the lower rooms was used as a dark room for his work,” Ms Milson said.

There are five bedrooms in total.

Jessica Cao, of Ray White Upper North Shore, said the grounds feature established gardens, sandstone paved entertaining areas and a saltwater pool shielded by high hedges.

The property goes under the hammer on 30 May and is in the catchment area of Killara High School.
