While Robby, a huge fan of the show, might be prepared for life on The Block, Mat will be in for a shock, having never watched a single episode before.

These two probably have the least renovating experience out of all the teams, making them this year’s reno rookies, however having both built their own businesses from the ground up, they won’t be strangers to hard work.

“From a marketing and a buyer perspective, the buyers will come in here, and it's, I think it's very hard to knock, it feels very luxurious,” he said.

While Shaynna loved the textures, the layout and functionality, she said the styling was cliché.

However, Darren said “quiet luxury” spoke to the market, and it was a chic approach.

“I think quiet luxury is something that people really gravitate to, especially when it functions properly,” he said.

Score: 20.5, fifth place

From first place in week one to last place this week, Robby and Mat’s rooms did not win the judges over, with Marty likening the second space to an “upmarket nursing home”.

The first room was applauded for its vibrancy and sense of fun but the wardrobes were too close to the bed, with some paintwork not done in the timeframe.

The second room drew a slew of criticism from the judging trio.

“Oh, boys, what have you done?” Shaynna said. “It's gone to a very old styling aesthetic.”

Both Marty and Darren said the room lacked any mood.

“The mood is, I need to have a little lie down for five years,” Darren said.

Score: 26.5, first place

Winning the week by one point, Darren dubbed the space “the Goldilocks’ room”.

“This is everything we've seen work in other rooms, working extremely well all together. I think the boys have got a really sweet spot,” he said.

The tile layout, and lines were perfect, Darren said.

“This is absolutely the right direction. This is showing that they have an eye for detail and finesse, and they really have a sense of style that I think is really going to fit this house and this market,” he said.

Meet Robby and Mat

Best mates since meeting 15 years ago in Adelaide when Mat cut Robby’s hair, it was Robby’s idea to apply for The Block while Mat was in Bali celebrating his 40th birthday.

“I was sitting at home and my partner Alyssa said myself and Mat would be great on The Block and here we are,” Robby said.

“If someone had told me with a crystal ball the likelihood of going on The Block or my house burning down, I would have said our house burning down,” Mat said.

So much so, Mat had never even watched The Block.

Robby, 37, barber and business owner

Robby is no stranger to hard work. He owns four salons under the Attaboy name in Adelaide, as well as a cafe.

Growing up, Robby was a soccer player and for years was part of the National Premier League.

He has a partner Alyssa and son Brooks, who will be nearly one when The Block hits the screens.

“When I left to go on The Block, leaving him was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” Robby said

Mat, 41, hairdresser and stylist, and business owner

During his childhood growing up in Adelaide, Mat was one of Australia’s best figure skaters, which taught him determination and to take nothing for granted.

He is a hard worker with a thick skin, and has a worldwide reputation as a top hair stylist.

He has a salon called MJ Hair and over 32 thousand Instagram followers.

Style and experience

Of all the Blockheads this year, the pair have the least renovation experience.

However, they will not let that deter them as they have built businesses which involves project management.

Robby believes Australians will relate to them.

“We are just two best mates, a hairdresser and a barber, gay and straight,” he said.

Mat will be in charge of shopping and styling on The Block, while Robby manages the trades.

Their Block style is contemporary country, with an Australiana edge.
