The Block 2024 episode 40 recap: loo with an unwelcome view gets big thumbs down from judges

1 week ago 13

Kylie and Brad might be no fans of Maddy and Charlotte’s, but tonight the two couples have something in common — the feeling of being panned by the judges.

Maddy and Charlotte’s disastrous week ends on a fitting note, with Marty Fox and Shaynna Blaze giving the thumbs down to their guest bedroom with one double bed above another.

The girls thought adding the ability to sleep four in one room would add value to their self-contained guest wing, but Shaynna points out that no adults seeking a weekend getaway would want to sleep with their kids right above them.

Marty meanwhile thinks the whole room lacks a luxe feel.

Maddy and Charlotte’s custom bunk bed didn’t win over Shaynna or Marty.

…and neither did their loo with a view.

Darren Palmer is a dissenter.

“The craftsmanship of that bed! It’s all timber, it’s been made for purpose, it’s not something you buy off the shelf. There’s a kitchen with everything you need except a cook top, you’ve got your own bathroom, lounge room and separate entrance. What part of the market is this not hitting? If it wasn’t for the lack of paint and finish, this is a 10 for me.”

The judges all agree the girls’ laundry is far too cramped for a house that sleeps 10, that fact it includes a toilet visible to an outdoor seating area through a clear glass door, a move Shaynna calls “nasty”, seals their fate.

Kylie and Brad’s echoing and almost storage-less bedroom.

Kylie and Brad cop it from the judges for the second week in a row. The first thing the judges notice about their guest bedroom is how echoey the cavernous room is. They also hate the fact there’s just a single narrow wardrobe and not enough drawers, but their main beef seems to be that Kylie and Brad haven’t made changes to their style based on previous feedback.

“Is there any listening?” Marty asks. “Is anything sinking in? Because there’s listening in other contestants and their rooms are getting better but there’s a see saw happening in house four.”

Shaynna defends them, noting the excellent job they did in their winning living and dining space but also declares “the whole mezzanine has no idea what it is”.

Downstairs, Darren finds the couple’s laundry “sedate and discreet” but Shaynna doesn’t like the fact the washer and dryer are behind doors and is affronted by a studded Ottoman, for reasons known only to herself.

It’s better news for Courtney and Grant. They have listened to the judges, adding a wall and built-in wardrobe to their mezzanine living area, which makes room for a king bed and art work in their guest bedroom.

The judges love the olive tones, choice of art and do a complete 180 on the divisive ensuite bathroom.

After declaring “I absolutely hate it”, Marty now says “This is now the wing I would like to sleep in in this house”.

Shaynna lauds Courtney’s eye for detail and after dismissing last year’s “Japandi” style as being old hat, says Courtney and Grant’s “Moditerranean” is “their own look that is unique and sets them apart”.

Their laundry is slightly less successful, with the appliance placement beneath the stairs a guarantee users will hit their heads, and the lack of a toilet meaning anyone using the pool will have to traipse through the house to the nearest loo.

Ricky and Haydn win plaudits for their guest bedroom with bunk beds and trundle, desk space and plenty of wardrobe space but the judges note there are now too many kids’ beds and not enough adult beds in the home.

Their laundry room with stacked appliances, bench seat and separate powder room with pink pedestal basin is a big hit, and they look like they’ll be in with a chance of a win.

Ricky and Haydn’s upstair’s kids room, with an off-the-shelf bunk bed that beat Maddy and Charlotte’s custom version.

Certainly Mimi and Kristian aren’t going to challenge them. The judges can’t seem to look past the fact they didn’t take their advice to convert last week’s lounge/pool cabana space into a bedroom and make this week’s room a lounge.

Instead, they’ve doubled down with a timber nib wall and wall of wardrobes creating a bedroom with no ensuite that will be almost impossible to convert back into a lounge, while the room designated on the plans as a bedroom with ensuite is now a lounge room near the pool.

Ricky and Haydn give good laundry.

“You cannot fault the look and feel of this room but this is a bedroom with all the noise and you have a lounge room with an ensuite. Are you really going to have a shower while people are watching TV?” Shaynna asks.

Their choice also means there are no bedrooms on the lower level with an ensuite.

Mimi professes herself mystified as to why this could be a problem.

“I understand it’s a luxury to have a bathroom in your bedroom, but people make do. Go for a little walk!”

Kristian and Mimi stuck to their guns and put a bedroom in the space earmarked for a living area, with a configuration that means it can’t be changed back.

Their laundry, however, is declared “the laundry of the day” by the judges. Its unique green appliances, benchspace, hanging racks and easy access to the pool all get the thumbs up.

It’s looking neck and neck between Courtney and Grant and Ricky and Haydn, but Courtney and Grant wisely use their bonus point and win by half a point.

Kristian and Mimi’s laundry room was declared the laundry of the day.

Judges’ final scores

Courtney and Grant 29.5

Ricky and Haydn 29

Kylie and Brad 22.5

Kristian and Mimi 20.5

Maddy and Charlotte 20
