A North Adelaide home overlooking the city’s idyllic parklands offers a country-like lifestyle despite being just minutes from the CBD and a short walk from the fringe suburb’s cafes and popular shopping precinct.

Vendors Andrew and Jill bought the 89 Kingston Tce home 33 years ago, attracted by its location and potential to be transformed into a grand family entertainer.

“It needed some radical TLC, but it just had a really lovely feel when you walked in, and the parkland frontage was so stunningly beautiful,” Jill says.

“Even though you’re so close to the city and all the amenities of North Adelaide you had this almost country outlook at horses.”

Offering up to five bedrooms or four and a home office, and decorated in a contemporary colour scheme throughout, Jill says it took a lot of work to transform it into the picturesque home it is now.

“We reinstalled the ceiling roses, picture rails and cornicing, as well as rewired and reroofing the original four rooms of the house to restore it to its original period, and kept the picket fence and had it all repointed,” she says. “And then the extension we kept in sympathy with the heritage of the home.”

An open-plan kitchen, dining and living area sits at the front of the home, while on the lower level you’ll find a living room, a cellar and a laundry.

“A lot of our family and friends live interstate, and over the years we’ve had every member of the family – nephews, nieces, brothers and sisters – either stay here or visit us,” Jill says.

“We’d have big family Christmases here. It’s always been open to family, friends and dogs and we’d have parties into the wee hours. It’s always been a place to be lived in and enjoyed.”

As beautiful as the home is, Jill says its location is an enormous drawcard.

“We’ll never be built out here and we only have one direct neighbour because we’re on a corner block with a laneway behind us,” she says.

“North Adelaide has such a lovely village feel – we know all of our neighbours and everyone is welcoming and friendly. Plus, we’re a 15 minute walk from Adelaide Oval and the Festival Centre precinct.

“Then when the Fringe is on there’s a free bus service to the city, and we can just drive up Bundey’s Rd when we want to go to Kent Town and Norwood, so it’s been a wonderfully central location.”

With the couple no longer needing a four-bedroom home, the time has come to let someone else enjoy it to the fullest.

“It will be sad to say goodbye to it because of all of our wonderful memories.”
