Their daughter Sonya Dyer said it was her mother who actually found the block.

“We had just moved over from New Zealand and mum decided that was where she wanted to live,” Ms Dyer said.

“She managed to track down the owner and buy the block.

“At the time you could buy a block of land in Paradise Waters for $50,000 and it was back when there were double blocks available.”

Her father, a stonemason, spent most afternoons building the two-storey family home which included four bedrooms and two bathrooms.

“After work each day he would work on the house,” Ms Dyer said.

“He dug all the foundations by hand and did the steel and footings, block work and brickwork.

“It is a very solid house as dad was paranoid about cyclones when he built it.”

Ms Dyer said she had fond memories growing up on Welby St, often swimming in the canals and walking the quiet streets to Pacific Fair.

“We used to swim across the canal all the time,” she said.

“Part of the deal coming from New Zealand is that we would get a dog and we ended up with a collie who used to swim across the canal with us.

“I’d never let my son swim in there now.”

The house was also a hub for overseas family to come and stay on the Gold Coast.

“It was a nice big house for when relatives came over from Europe,” she said.

“It was very handy for visitors and everybody loved visiting the Gold Coast of course.”

The lower level features a kitchen, formal lounge and a multipurpose room while upstairs includes the bedrooms, a bathroom and a powder room.

The property includes a sandy beach.

Both levels offer water and Hinterland views while the block has almost 60m of water frontage.

“You get the afternoon sunsets which are really nice,” Ms Dyer said.

“You sit in the kitchen and look out over the water and it’s really pleasant.”

While bittersweet to sell, Ms Dyer said the time was right to pass the property on.

“Mum and dad have really looked after it over the years,” she said.

There are water views from both levels of the house.
