The home at 37 Flinders St, Queenscliff has been listed for sale.
Steeped in history, with links to Queen Victoria and sporting royalty, the Queenscliff property Sagres’ background is as intriguing as the property is spectacular.
The beach residence at 37 Flinders St was originally built in the early 1990s by late architect Wayne Gillespie for Sir Rupert and Lady Susannah Clarke.
Sir Rupert is the fourth baronet of Rupertswood, an Australian hereditary title created by Queen Victoria and the Victorian property that’s the source of cricket’s Ashes.

The home is a private paradise behind the dunes at Queenscliff.
The property is currently managed as short-stay accommodation called Sagres by
Jo Youl, their youngest daughter, who grew up holidaying there.
“I absolutely loved the beach, nippers, body boarding in winter, inviting my friends to stay,” Jo says.
“I have great memories of mum hosting summer lunches on the balcony that faces the ocean.”
Located footsteps from Nuns Beach via a direct access path, with a backdrop overlooking the waters of Port Phillip Heads, the stunning location and its views are a feature within the home, including within its master bedroom.
“You can watch the ships roll in and out all day and night,” Jo says.

A mineral pool adds to the attraction on the 2032sq m beachside property.
The home at 37 Flinders St, Queenscliff has been listed for sale.
The property was aesthetically renovated in 2022 by a family friend who is a Geelong builder, friend and interior designer Emily Fitzgerald and Jo herself.
“We painted the house, replaced carpet with herringbone floorboards and gave the kitchen and bar area a makeover,” Jo says.
“We also put a mineral pool in 2023 and completed some amazing landscaping to activate the driveway and spaces in the garden.”
The renovation was inspired by a desire to bring the original home into the modern era while maintaining the original vision of the property – to create beautiful and functional spaces inspired by the Mediterranean coastline.
“The late Wayne Gillespie was well known for his spatial proportions, and he does not disappoint, when you are in the house, all you see is stunning views of the ocean and the Heads,” Jo says.

The home has a private entrance to Sagres, which takes its name from a place in Portugal, once thought to look out to the edge of the known world.
The main bedroom suite has a view directly across The Rip to Point Nepean.
The inclusion of relaxed organic fibres, layers of neutral tones and textures, soft patterns and fun objects through soft furnishings, finishes, furniture, and homewares helped link Gillespie’s vision with the modern era, complementing the original design of the house “while allowing the surroundings to soak in”, Jo says.
The living and entertaining area takes centre stage – two terrace balconies offering distinct, stunning views of the surroundings and a kitchen with thick stone benchtops and high-end appliances are standouts.
Another favourite space is the outdoor entertaining area.
“The kids thoroughly enjoy the pool, it’s a perfect space for all ages and stages,” Jo says.
