Secret garden: Inner-city terrace with a surprising urban oasis

An elegant and sophisticated two-storey Victorian terrace with its own Japanese garden oasis is up for grabs in Richmond, offering the ideal urban haven.

The three bedroom, two bathroom terrace at 14 Union Street, Richmond has hit the market for the first time in 44 years and has been restored by its owner who is now looking to travel.

“She’s absolutely loved the place. It's been a great home for her over a good period of time,” sales agent Toby Parker from Belle Property Balwyn said.

“She had some incredible things in there, like, there's a pot in there from Japan worth a fortune, and it’s staying with property.

“I would say she has eclectic taste.”

Behind its classic terrace façade lies high ornate ceilings, soaring archways, leadlight doors, hardwood floors, with marble fireplaces taking centre stage of the formal lounge and dining rooms.

The architect designed industrial kitchen features a Glem freestanding oven, Fisher & Paykel appliances, a Murano glass light fitting, as well as artisan crafted zinc benchtops.

Other highlights include a retreat or third bedroom, which is currently being used as a home cinema with a laser projector, screen and surround sound system.

The Japanese garden with a deck, and two fishponds, has rear access to a carpark.

The deck has retractable blinds, and a spiral staircase leads to the upper balcony, with stunning city views.

“One of the highlights when you sit at the back is you can see AAMI Park, you can walk to the ‘G, you've got Bridge Road shopping just up the road,” Mr Parker said.

“Literally, you can almost kick the football to the shops, and then go and have a kick at the ‘G.”

Buyer interest has been steady, Mr Parker said, particularly from interstate.

“One of the buyer’s comments was that… if you can see what you can buy in Sydney compared to Melbourne, it makes Melbourne look very attractive, so they may end up relocating, but that was a pretty interesting comment from the buyer,” he said.

Properties of this calibre within this Richmond pocket were rare, Mr Parker said.

“That style and that location is certainly tightly held and walking to everything – I know Richmond's famous for that - but how well positioned this house is, I think is what really is its biggest selling feature,” he said.

The home is set for auction Saturday, April 5 with a price guide of $1.8 million to $1.98 million.
