Real estate agent forced to smash down front door at open home inspection

Adelaide househunters got more than they bargained for at the open of an eastern-suburbs home over the weekend.

Around 50 hopeful buyers lined the street outside 8 Kurralta Drive, Burnside on Saturday, eager to inspect the four-bedroom residence ahead of its auction later this month.

However, entry to the home was delayed when the key broke in the lock, requiring selling agent Troy Law of Harris Real Estate to smash down the front door in a display buyers are unlikely to forget.

“When we arrived at the property a couple of minutes before the open time we could see they were having some trouble getting into the property,” a buyer who wished not to be named told the Advertiser.

“A few minutes later a pretty big crowd had gathered on the front lawn. There was a bit of confusion before we heard from the agent that the key to the front door had broken inside the lock.

“I assumed we would have to go home and come back another day to check out the property. But then the agent decided to bust the front door open. It was pretty funny to watch.

“It only took him a couple of goes, which was pretty impressive. The door was smashed in – but the agent promised everyone that was there that the house would be offered with a brand new door.”

The home’s well-kept appearance and location appeals to family buyers.

Mr Law, who is selling the property with a price guide of $1.299m, said the incident caused plenty of laughs but he assured buyers the door would be replaced ahead of the home’s auction on August 24.

He also said the broken door could not be avoided as there was no other entry point into the home.

“We had a bit of a choice to make. Do we send them all home because the lock broke on the door and we couldn’t open it … or do we just take out the front door and put a new one on,” he said.

“I think everyone was pretty happy with it.”

The home features a flexible layout with multiple living areas.

The master bedroom is spacious and features its own ensuite.

The rear yard offers plenty of room for kids and pets to play.

Zoned for Burnside Primary and Glenunga International High School, Mr Law said the home – which features a versatile layout across two levels, solar and a double undercroft garage with a rear studio – was proving popular with family buyers.

He said a number of formal offers were on the table, however, the vendors were keen to see the home sold under the hammer.

“It’s a good-sized family home that hasn’t been overly renovated and is in somewhat original condition,” Mr Law said.

“It also sits on a great block of land so it will do very well on the open market.”

Mr Law said the home would again be open for inspection on weekend, hopefully with a new door.
