Rare gem: Step back in time in heritage listed Georgian terrace

A circa 1840s heritage listed Georgian terrace serving as a timeless example of Australia’s early colonial days in Windsor, NSW, is up for grabs.

Dubbed the ‘Doctor’s House,’ the five bedroom, four bathroom residence at 3 Thompson Square, Windsor is a majestic mix of historical charm and modern luxury with hallmarks of its important role in the town’s heyday remaining.

For more than 100 years, the residence served as a recognised surgery practise for doctors and the Hawkesbury community, where its name the ‘Doctor’s House’ arose.

In recent times, it has been a much loved home, and its owners have meticulously restored it, which includes relocating the kitchen from the second floor downstairs for practicality.

Spanning three levels, the property overlooks the Hawkesbury River and its long list of highlights include a claw foot bath in the main bathroom, soaring ceilings, French doors and a sprawling attic with a home office, a storage area, and an extra bedroom.

A convict hand-carved, sandstone walled basement is adjacent to an old world style dining room and wine cellar await.

A wisteria arbour in the tranquil gardens was inspired by famed Australian artist Norman Lindsay’s Blue Mountains gallery.

“That backyard, sitting out there is like being in another world, but you're right in the heart of town - the gardens are just magical,” sales agent Greg Vincent from McGrath Hawkesbury said.

“So many people have commented just how stunning the place is. It's a landmark of the district.”

According to its NSW State Heritage Inventory listing, the residence is “a rare example of a Colonial Georgian terrace of outstanding architectural merit.

“It is located in an important position overlooking Thompson Square, one of the most significant public squares in Australia,” it stated.

Mr Vincent said there was scope to use the property as an AirBnb, or Bed and Breakfast venture, or set it up as a professional venture with its 45 minute drive from Sydney a strong buyer lure.

“I think someone that's probably looking at, I suppose coming from the hustle and bustle of Sydney,  and they want something with a really nice, relaxed atmosphere but still having that old world charm like the older homes that are built in the inner city of Sydney,” he said.

“This gives them a really affordable option.”

The property is advertised for sale with a price guide of $2,950,000 - $3,245,000.
