Price slashed for ex-race car driver’s seized beachfront penthouse

A penthouse owned by the wife of ex-race car driver and cricketer Scott Hookey has sold for $6m — more than $3m less than the couple originally sought before it was seized by the mortgagee.

The sprawling beachfront pad commands spectacular views over Palm Beach, and is regarded as one of the biggest properties of its kind on the southern Gold Coast.

Spanning two levels on top of the Temple building, the 675 sqm apartment comes complete with a private rooftop terrace with heated pool, spa, putting green and covered barbecue kitchen.

Back inside, there’s even a panic room which doubles as a boutique-style dressing room.

Scott and Lisa Hookey had listed the home at 7/1491-1493 Gold Coast Hwy in April 2023 with price hopes of more than $9m, before the mortgagee exercised power of sale.

Ray White Surfers Paradise agent Robbie Graham then took the property to auction but it passed in and was listed with a $6.95m price tag.

Mr Graham said the buyer was from country Queensland and had not bid at the auction.

“The purchasers will undertake a considerable renovation to the property, which is already one of the largest penthouses in southern Queensland,” Mr Graham said.

“While the penthouse itself was in need of renovation, Palm Beach is very special and one of the more desirable beachfront locations on the Gold Coast, and this being a 675 sqm apartment in a small building of seven — properties like this don’t come up all that often.”

Mr Graham said the penthouse would be held as a family holiday home by the new owner.

Property features included three bedrooms, four bathrooms and three carparking spaces, with a huge balcony taking in stunning ocean views stretching to Burleigh Headland and the Hinterland.

The home was originally fitted with a commercial-style kitchen — rumoured to have been customised off the plan to accommodate a private chef for the first owner.

The Hookeys picked up the Temple penthouse for $5.5m in 2021 after flipping their former Sanctuary Cove mansion for $5.85m the previous year.

They posed for photos showcasing that home’s Ferrari-themed bar with beer on tap and Formula One memorabilia throughout. Other features of the mansion were a 10-car basement garage, and waterview bath shaped like a giant stiletto.

Mr Hookey played cricket for NSW until 1995, while he raced his Ferrari in the Super GT Australia series up to 2018.
