A Port Lincoln mansion renowned for its saltwater aquarium built in to its loungeroom wall has sold after three years on the market.

The waterfront property at 16-18 North Point Ave changed hands earlier this month in a $2.8m deal, according to property records.

It marks the end of a years-long campaign to sell the “unique” house in the Lincoln Cove Marina, which hit the market in early 2023 with a $3.85 million price guide.

The property is renowned for its unique features, including the 8m by 3.5m saltwater aquarium in the loungeroom that has an array of colourful fish.

The Port Lincoln home at 16-18 North Point Ave has sold after three years on the market.

It’s well-known for its jaw-dropping aquarium.

The vendor purchased the house in February 2022 for an undisclosed price from the late Ron Forster – who was a game fishing record-holder, property developer, tuna farming pioneer and pivotal in growing the shark-diving industry – and his wife Janet.

The couple built the house, which now has five bedrooms and five bathrooms, in 1988.

Ms Forster said in May 2020 when the home first hit the market that it was her husband’s idea to install the aquarium after finding inspiration in one they saw at a resort, but she didn’t realise just how big it was going to be until it was finished.

Kemp Real Estate principal Steve Kemp, who sold it for the Forsters, said in 2020 that it cost the couple more than $1m to install the aquarium, which was cleaned regularly by a diver.

Mr Kemp sold the property again this time, explaining several factors had led to it remaining on the market for so long before selling to an interstate buyer.

“The vendor went off travelling overseas … and we’ve had several contracts on it along the way, but this one is now unconditional,” said Mr Kemp, who sold the property with Carl Semmler.

“I think in the medium term the buyers’ plans are that they will move to the area.”

Mr Kemp said it was the “most unique house I’ve ever had the pleasure of selling”.

The vendor upgraded the home in the year between buying and relisting it, including revitalising the aquarium, installing solar panels and adding a bedroom with ensuite.

Mr Kemp said it attracted a range of prospective buyers throughout its campaign, including many from interstate.

“We’ve got a lot of interstate buyers looking in Port Lincoln and the market seems to be going from strength the strength,” he said.
