Dame Marie Bashir, NSW’s first female governor, loved and tightly held her Sydney homes for decades.

She and her late husband and Wallaby captain, Sir Nicholas Shehadie, lived in their Mosman house for more than half a century.

Now their longheld Palm Beach weekender has come to market guiding $10m – offered for the first time in more than 26 years.

Dr Marie Bashir, 94, served as NSW Governor for 13 years until 2014, studied medicine at Sydney University and became a Professor of Psychiatry with a particular interest in mental health among the young and marginalized.

The former governor and her husband bought 115 Pacific Rd, Palm Beach for $1.026m in 1998.

Pacific Rd is one of Palm Beach’s best-regarded addresses.

She was Chancellor of Sydney University between 2007 and 2012, served as Sydney Lady Mayoress in the mid-1970s and her distinguished public service led to her being made a Dame in 2014.

Her husband was also notable having been a former Wallaby captain, Lord Mayor of Sydney and chairman of SBS.

The couple’s permanent home was in Mosman. They lived in Shellbank Ave for more than 50 years declining to take up residence in the official Government House next to the Botanic Gardens. Dr Bashir sold their Mosman home with its harbourfront swimming pool in 2020 for $7m, a couple of years after her husband’s passing.

It’s on 1265sqm of level land with north-facing views across Palm Beach, Barrenjoey Headland and Cape Three points.
