James Tedesco and wife Maria bought a Hunters Hill mansion for $5m.

It’s the priciest house that’s ever been snapped up by an NRL star during their playing career and has been described by agents as a landmark home – but James Tedesco’s Hunters Hill mansion hasn’t impressed everyone.

Tedesco and wife Maria purchased the two-level, 2013-built house in 2022 for $5m, which was about $400,000 above the price guide.

The contemporary-style home is a standout in plush Hunters Hill, with five bedrooms, basement parking for three cars and a lofty atrium that lets in natural light across both levels.

It comes with an open plan downstairs lounge, kitchen, family room, alfresco space with outdoor kitchen overlooking an impressive glass edge pool. The 2022 listing for the home described it as “luxury living at its best”.

It is understood that the architect-designed property is about five houses down from Maria’s family, parents Angelo and Marlene, and brother, Jake.

The home, which was renovated before the Tedescos moved in, was included in The Daily Telegraph’s Top 50 NSW Homes special, ranked at number 22.

But the overwhelming reaction from readers was that the NRL superstar’s home wasn’t worthy of that position, with 73 per cent deeming it “overrated” and only 21 per cent agreeing with the ranking.

Of the thousands who voted on the rankings, 6 per cent indicated the home was “underrated”, inferring that the property should have been higher in the list.

A property owned by fellow NRL star Nathan Cleary, which was another house given a nod in the top 50 list, also got the “overrated” tag – this time from 85 per cent of readers.

Cleary bought the home from his coach and father Ivan in June for $1.7m and has set about adding a “moody” colour scheme to the home.
