Madison Area Community Land Trust (MACLT) is a nonprofit organization committed to providing affordable and sustainable homeownership opportunities for low-income families in Dane County. MACLT is Dane County's only non-profit focused on permanently affordable homeownership, and part of a movement of over 300 community land trusts across North America.
Through their innovative land trust model, MACLT helps individuals and families purchase homes at below-market rates, while preserving long-term affordability of the homes in the land trust. MACLT’s resale formula ensures that these homes remain affordable for future generations, which helps to prevent displacement and maintain diverse, inclusive neighborhoods.
MACLT has served 123 low-income families with the 62 permanently-affordable homes in the land trust, which means the impact of the dollars invested into these homes has doubled over time, and continues to grow with each new generation of homebuyers. In 2020, MACLT added an equity lens to better serve those who are marginalized from homeownership. When MACLT has a home for sale, priority is given to first-generation homebuyers, individuals with permanent disabilities, and families at the lowest incomes. In the last two years, MACLT has sold homes to families with annual incomes between $43,000 and $75,000, with a median MACLT home sale price of $187,000 (about $100,000 below appraised value).
MACLT is continuing to expand their programming and the number of homes in the land trust. Over the next year, seven new homes will be added to the land trust, and at least 11 more are planned to break ground in 2026. MACLT needs your support to continue expanding their impact in Dane County.
