The owner of 63 Whatley St, Carrum, grandmother Elaine celebrates the sale of her house with Ray White Patterson Lakes principal Genevieve Hill.

A 90-year-old grandmother bid farewell to her Carrum house of almost three decades after it sold for $1.52 million on the weekend.

Ray White Patterson Lakes principal Genevieve Hill gave the owner of 63 Whatley St, Elaine, a bottle of champagne to celebrate with following the successful auction, which she said 50 groups showed interest in buying.

Ms Hill said Elaine and her late husband had moved into the residence in the early 1990s.

Across their years at the home Elaine’s husband renovated and extended the abode, that was originally built in 1950 as a weatherboard, before being converted to a brick veneer 15-years later.

Ms Hill said Elaine had enjoyed the sheer amount of space her five-bedroom house and 1144sq m block provided.

“She loved the fact she could have all her kids and grandkids there, running around and enjoying the entertaining,” Ms Hill added.

The home’s location close to shops and public transport meant Elaine, who played tennis into her 80s, could walk anywhere she needed to.

Ms Hill said Elaine had put her home on the market after making plans to move into a retirement village.

Prior to the auction some 50 groups inspected the property featuring a living room with a gas fireplace, two bathrooms, two powder rooms, a laundry and garage.

The property has a 26.65m-long street frontage.

“I think buyers loved the fact it was a large size, the living spaces, that it was so meticulously well-built and the location was also a factor,” Ms Hill said.

“The owner and her family have maintained it very well; nothing needed to be done for the sales campaign except for a bit of styling.”

Five bidders competed for the keys to the house.

“It started off with a $1.1m bid, the reserve was $1.375m and it sold for $1.52m,” Ms Hill said.

The winning bidder was a family from New South Wales that competed over the phone.

“It was a huge auction with a big crowd and lots of locals watching on,” Ms Hill said.

The kitchen has been modernised across the years.

About 30km away in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs a house at 17 Veronica St, Ferntree Gully, sold under the hammer for $639,000 on Saturday.

Ray White Wantirna’s Sam Daryabi said that out of eight registered bidders – including a Sydney-based investor who bid via phone – six participated in the auction.

A pair of first-home buyers snapped up the house.

“The young couple are going to renovate and make it their home,” Mr Daryabi said.
