Penthouses and terrace-style townhouses are among the first stage of the Riverside development offered for sale.

A $102m riverside residential development offers the first chance for people to enjoy living on the city’s newest waterfront strip at Newtown.

Glengarry Developments’ Riverside project is launching the Premier Release of 18 dwellings to the market, including a collection of penthouse apartments and terrace-style townhouses.

The 9580sq m project at 510 Latrobe Blvd, Newtown, was green lit this year to deliver 57 apartments and 17 townhouses on the former Union Woollen mill site next to Barwon Grange.

Architect Asher Greenwood from GKA Architects designed the project, which will create several main buildings, with two blocks of apartments facing the river and rows of townhouses on either side of the property.

A four-storey apartment building with a semi undercroft basement will sit at the heart of the project, which also offers a lap pool and gym for residents, and a riverside cafe will be open to the public.

The project has been so long in the making that developer Wayne Jennings’ lawnmower has just given up the ghost, after 19 years of cutting the grass.

A riverside cafe open to the public is part of the first stage of the development.

“We haven’t been fined by council yet (which is great) because the grass is too long,” Mr Jennings boasted.

“I’ve got a nice mower but the crank shaft has damaged the bearing and I can’t fix it.

“Anyway a new mower is coming and I’ll be hitting it next Monday and then we’ll be right.”

Mr Jennings said it’s a long-awaited project in a location above the 100 year Barwon River flood zone and gives direct access to the riverside parkland.

“You can enjoy the river and live there – it’s a rare opportunity,” Mr Jennings said.

Terrace-style townhouses provide residents with easy access to riverside parkland.

“This is the only site along the Barwon River where you can walk straight on to the track and go for a run, or cycle or walk. We’re pretty excited.

“I think a lot of people who are looking for that healthy lifestyle, the tranquillity and the natural environment will love living there.”

Mr Jennings said the riverfront cafe is part of the first stage, along with road access to the first homes unimpeded by further construction.

The wellness centre will come later, he said.

The development opens up a new vantage overlooking Barwon River parkland at Newtown.

Selling agent Nic Cuni said he expects plenty of interest from downsizers from the Bellarine, but also young professionals and Melbourne people changing cities.

“There may even be options to do some combination apartments as well, putting two together to create bigger residences,” he said.

“The majority are two-level townhouses, so they’re going to be good for downsizers too. But there’s a lot of young professionals, young couples in the area who like that low maintenance living and being close to the city.

A residents’ only lap pool and gymnasium will be a feature of the $102m development.

“They’re not going to be having to spend $2.5m to $3m on a home, they can get a townhouses here from $1.5m and get the Newtown postcode without the price tag.”

Mr Cuni said the project, with residences priced between $1.5m and $2.5m, has the potential to be iconic.

“Like every great city of the world, the river is the lifeblood. People will want to live close by. They can pop out to the coffee shop, there will be a few restaurants popping up around the area, so people can go for the exercise, they can wake up in the morning and listen to the birds.”
