The four-bedroom house at 273 Pakington St, Newtown, is listed for sale with price hopes from $1.95m to $2.1m.

The owner of a striking, modern home next to a historic fire station sketched out an idea for what he wanted to build long before making an offer on the long-vacant irregular-shaped block.

A decade since purchasing the 381sq m property at the corner of Aphrasia St, the luxury four-bedroom residence at 273 Pakington St is being offered to the market for the first time.

Owner Daniel Glogolja said though he had sketched out the idea for the big house on the small pocket of land, he chose to bide his time as the asking price for the vacant block was beyond what he was prepared to pay.

“I was living at Chadwick St and I was riding my bike past and I saw it was for sale. And it was pretty long for sale and I started to sketch it up and see what I could build there,” he said.

“But the price was still high. I was always waiting to see that it had been sold. But then they dropped the price and couldn’t sell it, so I put an offer in,” he added.

“I just through it’s got some character and mainly because I was looking for something bigger, because we were living in a smaller place. The kids loved growing up here,” he said.

The home boasts features such as polished concrete floors, a floating timber staircase and double-height void above the dining area.

Skylights provide a unique natural light solution in the kitchen.

Building designer Sash Micevski from Another Dimension Building Design said negotiating with council’s heritage department over how the home impacted the heritage fire station’s tower was a major task in creating the home.

“There was a fair bit of back and forth with council in how we respect and provide visibility of the tower’s key elements, and making sure that was still visible with the design, and not coming too close at the street,” he said.

“But also providing a home that was big enough to suit their family on a site that probably wasn’t exactly forthcoming with space,” he added.

Large picture windows offer views across the leafy Newtown hill precinct.

The house wraps around a partially covered outdoor area that expands the space for entertaining.

“It’s probably one of my favourite homes that we’ve designed in the prominence on Pakington St. We wanted to make sure it actually looked good. So that sort of Scandi interior and exterior with the natural timbers that have been painted since.”

Gartland Geelong agent Tony Young, who has listed the four-bedroom house with a $1.95m to $2.1m price guide, said the owner was able to construct something that uses every square inch of the property.

“It’s just so spacious, and so you get inside, it’s like a TARDIS. You go in, there are four bedrooms plus a study, three bathrooms. It’s got a large open-plan kitchen and dining are downstairs,” he said.

“A second living area is upstairs, it’s a real box-ticker. I think they did a really nice job of blending it in with those other buildings,” he added.
