Low-maintenance living on the city-fringe

1 month ago 13

A College Park home offers a fantastic lock-up-and-leave lifestyle close to the city and is within walking distance of some of the state’s most prestigious schools.

Elizabeth Rushbrook and husband Peter Callahan bought their Torrens St home late last year, attracted by its proximity to the CBD and leafy location.

“We bought it off a man who was 98 and still living there, so I reckon that was a good omen,” Ms Rushbrook says.

“We were looking to be part of College Park and then to be opposite a reserve, near the coffee shop and close to Linear Park – it was just fantastic. We’ve got some friends here and they spoke very highly of it and living here and just loved it and it’s nearness to the city – it’s so close to the city but not in it, so it’s the best of both worlds.

Inside Australia’s most sustainable home of the year

The home overlooks picturesque Twelftree Reserve.

It offers affording flexible living and entertaining.

The master bedroom is a highlight of the home, boasting a large living area, with picture windows, showcasing elevated park views.

“We walk to North Adelaide for a browse and a shop, and we often walk into town too. We love the Botanic Gardens, the National Wine Centre is a great place to have a cup of coffee or a quiet glass of wine and the gardens along Hackney Rd are just beautiful too.

“It’s just the two of us here, but we feel like we share this space with an extended family as it sits opposite a park that is always used by families, children playing, people cooking barbecues, lots of playgroups, and there are stacks of mums with prams and babies, and everyone stops to chat, so you really do feel like you’re part of the community.”

The home features three bedrooms, with the two lower-level homes sharing a bathroom, and the upstairs master suite serviced by a powder room.

Voluminous light infused casual living areas feature throughout the home.

An outside patio is the perfect spot to entertain family and friends during the warmer months.

The family bathroom is spacious and comes with both a shower and a bath.

The heart of the home is undoubtedly the open-plan kitchen, dining and living room on the lower level that opens to a courtyard overlooking a low-maintenance garden.

“The upstairs room is fantastic because you overlook the park and you get a real sense of the day changing,” Ms Rushbrook says.

“With trees all around it feels like you could be in the country but really you’re so close to the city. It’s been great for entertaining, and when we go away for a weekend here and there you can just lock it up and leave and know that it’s totally safe and secure.”

The home is just a short walk from St Peter’s College, Adelaide Botanic High, Prince Alfred College and Wilderness School.

With the couple now downsizing to a city townhouse, Ms Rushbrook says it is time for someone else to enjoy it.

“It’s a home that could suit everyone and it will be hard to say goodbye because we’ve got so many happy memories there.”

The property is for sale through Booth Real Estate and has a price guide of $1.6m to $1.7m.
