‘Loves this area’: The Whitlams’ Tim Freedman selling Sydney home

The Whitlams’ frontman Tim Freedman is selling his freestanding terrace home in Sydney’s inner west, as the Aussie icon looks to downsize after two decades at the Newtown residence.

The Whitlams’ lead singer and keyboardist has listed the three-bedroom house at 78 Hordern Street in Newtown to go to auction on September 14, with a $2 million price guide.

The award-winning Australian indie rock band, known for hits such as 'Blow Up The Pokies', 'No Aphrodisiac' and 'I Make Hamburgers', has been performing since the early 1990s.

Selling agent and director Michael Harris at Raine & Horne – Newtown said he had sold the home to Mr Freedman in 2004, and was now selling it again on his behalf.

“Tim has been in the inner west for a long time, he actually owned a house nearby when he bought this one and moved across,” Mr Harris said.

“He loves this area... he’s staying local, he’s just downsizing.”

Mr Harris said the two-storey terrace had three bedrooms on the upper level, as well as a full-size bathroom.

“It has incredibly big living spaces right through the ground floor of the home,” he said.

“The aspect is fantastic for both the front and the rear of the property, with beautiful sun on the balcony of the main bedroom in the morning.

“Then in the afternoon, you get the sun into the garden and also onto the back balcony of the second bedroom.”

The lower level featured a living and dining room that flowed into the kitchen and family zone before leading out to the outdoor deck and courtyard.

All of the ground-level windows, as well as the upstairs front windows, have been acoustically engineered too – ideal for playing music or chatting animatedly with friends until the early hours without anyone knowing, according to the listing.

The home is just 240 metres from Newtown’s fabled King Street and its swathe of cafes, pubs, restaurants and live music venues.

It is also close to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, University of Sydney and Camperdown Memorial Rest Park.

Mr Harris said the home has proven popular with families and empty nesters since it was listed for sale last week.

“It’s a bit early to tell because we only opened the doors on Saturday, but we had 23 groups through there on Saturday which is a good number to see,” he said.

“It's appealing to a broad range of people, including young families, empty nesters and families with teenage kids.”

“Newtown has always been a great area to park your money, it’s had good capital growth being close to the city, with excellent transport systems and it's close to the airport.”

Newtown house prices increased 5.2% to $1.7625 million during the year to August, according to PropTrack.
