Former Melbourne Rebels centre and winger Tom English and wife Bess have sold 25 Chelmsford St, Kensington.

Former Melbourne Rebels player Tom English and wife Bess have offloaded their Kensington house for $960,000.

English notched 99 games with the Rebels in the Super Rugby league.

The union heavyweight played in the centre and on the wing for the team between 2012 and 2020.

English was also an Australia Sevens representative and in 2014 was invited to train with the Wallabies as they prepared to play against France.

He retired from the sport last year due to a neck injury and has since joined his family’s retail supply business Bricor.

Rendina Real Estate director Lou Rendina said the three-bedroom home at 25 Chelmsford St served as the Englishs’ residence until their recent relocation to Sydney.

English said he bought the home with his wife in 2019 and lived there intermittently while he was travelling between Japan and Melbourne.

“I would do a season in Melbourne and then a season in Japan, so we would stay there when we could,” he said.

“It was a lovely little spot, we were quite lucky.”

High ceilings, timber floors and heating and cooling are among the features.

While they lived at the house, the couple hosted barbecues with their friends including North Melbourne defender Luke McDonald and ex-player Majak Daw.

The Victorian-era abode features a north-facing backyard with an undercover patio and a kitchen fitted with soft-close drawers and a gas cooker.

Mr Rendina said an interstate-based investor bought the house, attracted by its proximity to public transport, parks, the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and the redevelopment of the 122-year-old red-brick Younghusband Woolstores in Elizabeth St, which will consist of offices, shops and open spaces.

The central living area leads to the kitchen.

“They had certainly done their homework and knew the area is up-and-coming and great for young families and investors,” Mr Rendina said.

“There’s no shortage of renters in that location too.”

The home is also within walking distance of Macaulay Rd and Bellair St’s cafes and shops.
