A palatial Gold Coast estate formerly owned by a nightclub kingpin is up for grabs for about $5 million – but the new owner will need even deeper pockets to restore its faded glory.

Known as ‘Quambone Castle’, the Tuscan-style mansion at 41 Quambone St, Worongary, has sat largely untouched since Glitter Strip identity Jamie Pickering sold it to property developer Jianpo Wu for $3.8m in 2015.

Now listed as a “timeless palatial private renovator” with an asking price of $5.15m to $5.65m, the seven-bedroom, five-bathroom home is set over a secluded 1.55ha parcel with sweeping skyline views.

The acreage property is known as Quambone Castle

Features include a tennis court, pool and spa, while inside there’s a cinema and expansive entertaining space with a bar and wine cellar that doubled as the ultimate man cave.

The kitchen has solid granite benchtops and a commercial-sized cool room, while upstairs, an opulent master bedroom suite includes a huge dressing room, a glamorous double bathroom, and a kitchenette. Five more kingsize bedrooms open onto east-facing sandstone Juliet balconies.

Mr Pickering, the former owner of Surfers Paradise nightclubs The Bedroom and Sin City, originally owned the quirky property from 1999 to 2003. He bought it back for $2.45m in 2006, claiming he couldn’t find a comparably private retreat.

Ex-nightclub boss Jamie Pickering sold the home ahead of auction in 2016

The controversial businessman previously stated he spent about $2m renovating the estate before offloading it to Mr Wu in a record-breaking unconditional deal in 2015.

The property is marketed by Harcourts Property Hub agents Lyn Newcomb and Jodi Russell.

“Despite its need for considerable renovation and modernising, Quambone Castle is not just a piece of bygone real estate, it’s a canvas for your dreams,” the listing states.

Ms Newcomb said the current owner first took the 1022sq m brick-and-tile home to market two years ago.

“It’s a beautiful piece of real estate, and if you have the bucks to spend on it, you’ll turn $5 million into $10 million,” Ms Newcomb said.

“There’s a lot of work to be done. [The owner] bought it in 2015 and hasn’t done a thing to it. It’s becoming more and more dilapidated, but saying so, you could not build today what’s there — it is so solidly built.”

Ms Newcomb said the home’s elevated position, set back 1km from the M1 and buffered by council land, made it an incredibly secluded hillside hideaway.

“It is a beautiful piece of land and the view is just amazing,” she said. “It is so private.”

PropTrack data shows house prices in Worongary were up 17.4 per cent over the past 12 months to a median of $1.517m.
